Win10 is like the Borg:

[resistance is futile, you will be assimilated}

I finally succumbed and did the update on my DAW. That was three days ago. Reaper, audio devices and plugs worked right out of the box (as did BIAB) - very good news. smile

However, after a few days of working in Win10 I am sad to report: cry

Jamstix is dead in Win 10
Musicnotes player and viewer is dead in Win 10

Any other reports?

Dan, did your VoiceLive Editor survive? I'm still debating this Win 10 thing...am concerned about my Fantom XR and Motif Rack XS software as well as Ian's editor.

"I like my species as it is" - Worf.

No problems with Windows 10 that weren't also with 8.1 (Firewire related). My Fantom XR works fine. I haven't tried running any editor for it, though, as I don't use that.

Those other examples given that are 'dead' in Windows 10: have you tried re-installing to be compatible with Windows 7?

Matt, I am in contact with both vendors and so far no responses. Both the applications mentioned worked fine in Win 7.

The MIDI 5-pin connection will ALWAYS work. However, I will admit that when 5 pin MIDI is no longer supported THEN it really is time to quite upgrading the OS.

I didn't abandon my Roland GR-50 (or NOT upgrade OS) when the editor I bought for it (FOR DOS) quite working after Win 3.1, (still have and use it)

I didn't abandon my Alesis QS8/QSR (or NOT upgrade OS)becasue the editors no longer worked in Win XP (and the RS-232 drivers no longer work in Win 7), (still have and use them)

I didn't abandon my Roland XV-5080 (or NOT upgrade OS) because the editors quite in Win 7 or becasue R-BUS was no longer supported (and I also have a Fantom XR) (still have and use those)

Because ALL of these synths still function as synths and make music over 5-pin MIDI cables, EVEN IN WIN 10.

Folks should probably be a little more specific about EXACTLY what doesn't work and in what configuration it doesn't work in a new OS.

I cannot believe a WHOLE BOX is now "kaput" (aka non-functioning or tango uniform) simply becasue you updated your OS?

I think what folks (usually) mean to say is that nice convenient single USB (or FW) cable is not going to work and you will have to go back to a bulky pair of LEFT/RIGHT audio cables PLUS a pair of MIDI I/O cables but it will still work

I agree 100% Larry, would never give up my hardware synths that I've been running, in some cases, 30 years. Definitely midi and audio cables for me. Where I do have some heartburn is the software interfaces I have for those synths and processors. Being able to program my hardware from the computer screen rather than from some 1"x2" screen on the hardware is just what these old eyes need.

Jamstix 3.6.0 64 bit seems to work on my system. I have not given it a full workout though as I just don't use it very often. Does Jamstix not work at all on your system?

"Reports of JS death in Win 10 have been slightly exaggerated" with respect to Mark Twain grin

With the help of some of my Reaper buddies, I got JS up and running in Win10.

I have one of the partitions on my computer upgraded to 10.

What I hate though is the way Microsoft is trying to push windows 10 down your throat.

I have got my windows 7 set not to manually download any updates. When I checked windows updates it insisted in downloading 10 before the monthly updates, even though I had not selected it, and I had uninstalled the "get windows 10" update from taskbar.

It then attempted to install windows 10 but got an error and couldn't. So every time after when I checked to download monthly updates, it insisted in re-downloading 10 again (even though it was already downloaded in the windows BT folder) and tried to install every time, which always ended in an error.

It took a bit of time and googling to get the (so far so good solution, microsoft could change it again) and a third party registry hack to stop it.

I do like having 10 as a novelty on one of my partitions, but to be honest windows 7 looks less cluttered and I have a reasonable idea where all the windows settings are.

And everything works. The computer doesn't seem to have to work as hard either, as it does on 10.

All I really like on 10 so far is the app store.

Yes, they certainly are.

I upgraded two computers OK. On a third Microsoft and after an exhaustive check Microsoft reported that 'All my current apps were compatible with Win 10'. I upgraded and the first app I tried (a software development environment) won't operate, Microsoft reporting "This App might not work correctly, it isn't compatible with this version of Windows".

Now I'm stuck between a rock and the proverbial. I have to uninstall 10 if I want to use the development environment on that machine...

Unimpressed

Take a deep breath and let a little time pass before you uninstall. Good chance with a clear head, you will find a way to fix the issue and your app will run in Win10.

We-ell, if you don't install it how are m$ going to spy on you?

You do know that Win10 is spying on you don't you? For the record, I will NOT be installing Win10, and if/when I finally HAVE to change, it will be to linux.

Yes, good advice Dan. It's been about three weeks, so I haven't jumped in.

However, I have tried many things to overcome the issues and none have been successful.

My real gripe is that if Microsoft knew immediately after Win 10 was installed that the app wasn't compatible, why didn't they know this before? Could've saved a lot of effort.

I doubt that I will get it to run with 10. I've been in touch with developers, forums and more. Every answer indicated that they all had an incompatibility issues and was so far unsolvable.

Sure, I can use a later development environment (I have the licenses) but there are some legacy objects in the earlier code that aren't compatible with the later development environment. Can't win either way.

I think not quite true. If you use all of the defaults then Microsoft will monitor certain usage.

But if you don't accept the defaults, I'm pretty sure you can turn all of this off.

If you check out the first link I posted, there is an excerpt of the license agreement that might cause you to re-assess that...

And while you can turn off much of it, you cannot turn it ALL off and the default is for it to ALL be ON, so if you are uninformed, like 99.9% of users, then m$ can monitor your every(?) move. Turning it off must be done AFTER installation, not during IIRC.

Trev, I'm sure you probably have tried this already but have you tried to run the program under one of the compatibility modes?

Have your tried a custom install under one of the compatibility modes?

For example a lot of people were complaining that MS Office 97 was not working in Win 7. I got it to work by a custom install under the XP compatibility mode. The problem wasn't Office it was Outlook. If you tried a normal install it would fail but in custom install one could uncheck Outlook and everything else installed with no problem. YMMV

PS - I do not open Emailed MS docs, Excel sheets or Access files in Office 97.

I got banned from Weight Watchers for dropping a bag of M&Ms on the floor.
It was the best game of Hungry Hippos I've ever seen!

Thanks Mario

Yep, tried many options (run as Win 7, XP, As Administrator etc)

It's an interesting error. It reports that it cannot load a library package and clearly identifies its location. The library package is definitely there. Non of this has changed. There are dozens of library packages that all get loaded successfully, but it refuses to load only this particular one.

I can see that a heap of other source code is going to need updating, so it can use use a later development platform. That' my only real way forward.

Thanks for the tips though.

Is there a different. possibly older, version of the library getting loaded from a different location (earlier in the search path)?
