Anybody have a recommendation for a good sub woofer? When I started using the real-tracks for acoustic bass I quickly became hooked on how much more clarity a sub woofer produced, and it wasn't a great one. Been using a cheapo Aiwa from my kid's abandoned stereo system. Recently crapped out. ideas and experiences appreciated, Thanks

The Behringer Truth B209A powered subwoofer is the adjunct to my B2031A powered monitors. They are incredibly flat down to 50 Hz. When the budget allows, this is the sub I will get. Note: Compare Behringer products to others in the same price range, not those with the same specs, and another aspect of the value will become apparent.

I recommended it sight unseen to a client, who bought one. He came back with praise unqualified except to say that it's big. $209 USD at musiciansfriend.com. Also recommended by Atlanta Pro Audio, our local user-friendly studio pro shop.

Quote:

High-power 360-Watt amplifier delivers extreme dynamic range, with linear bass reproduction down to 32 Hz

2 long-excursion 8" loudspeakers with deformation-resistant aluminum die-cast chassis for minimal distortion even at highest volume levels

Dedicated Left, Right and Center XLR inputs and outputs for all stereo and surround applications

Footswitch connector for remotely controllable A/B comparison (footswitch not included)

Etc., etc., etc. Just noticed that kewl footswitch thingie.

R.

I'm using a KRK Rockit 10. http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-KRK-K10S-LIST Every so often, they go on sale at Guitar Center or American Musical Supply.

Both, but the gigs are small venue. I haven't been bringing the subwoof on gigs, but want to start as it makes such a diff in how the real-tracks acoustic bass sounds even with a Mackie PA.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

BarryKJ asked a good question. I wouldn't want to use a home studio subwoofer on a gig. For one thing, my subwoofer is big and square with no handles to carry it. It is clearly meant to be placed once and left there. The subwoofers I've seen used on gigs (not mine) handled thousands of watts (more power is required for bass) and cost thousands, and they were passive, not active.

I assume you're talking about live gigs, at home I use headphones...From my experience as single or duo act guitar + vocals, a sub-woofer, any sub-woofer, makes a day and night difference. It gives the whole show body and substance, and an added bonus, it frees your PA speakers from low frequencies, enabling them to work at the flattest portion of their response with less distortion. I would love to use a 1000W 18" box, but I don't have anyone to load it and carry around :-)

So I usually rent the smallest powered sub-woofer I can get, and that is usually a 10" box. I use a lot the Yorkville Sound élite Series LS200P, 200W and only 55lb http://www.yorkville.com/products.asp?type=29&cat=2&id=239 enough to give me the extra depth without breaking my back.
