Anyone with a piano roll or staff view will do what you are asking. Just highlight all of the MIDI notes and move them up or down to the key you want. For instance a C chord, C-E-G, moved up one step would be a C# chord, C#-E#(F)-G#. Move it up another it becomes a D chord, D-F#-A.

The same will hold true for a MIDI melody line also. If the melody is C-F-A-Bb and you move it up two steps it will become D-G-B-C.

If you are moving a melody line say in the key of C up two steps but want to keep the original key of C (changing modes) then no I do not know of any.

melodyne is the only program I know of that will do that. I can't think of any other one that does.

I'm not certain how useful this would be.

It is far from uncommon to have a passing note that is outside the nominal key of the song. Particularly if you have a key change that is not notated but rather handled by a few accidentals because it only lasts a few bars.

Then there's the very common use of chromatic runs.

We-ell OK, but I could do that much faster in the notation package I use rather than a MIDI editor, and the notes will be "on key" anyway because there will already be a key signature in place...

To do what he's doing in that vid seems to me to be the hard way. Piano roll is great for subtle timing shifts 'n stuff, but for straight up note input and changes a notation package would IMHO, be a far more effective choice.

That said, the tools one is familiar with are always the "best" ones...

Yeah, I think most DAW's with staff and piano roll view (PRV) will do that.

Often as I work in a DAW editing midi to something that I've played in....and there are notes that are wrong and need to be moved..... I often do NOT set the key in the DAW. Mostly since I work with audio in the DAW as opposed to midi, so it defaults to "C" IIRC. And lets say the key is "G" ... to make it easy. And I need to either add or edit one of the F# notes..... so I drag the note to F#.... and the DAW wants to put it on the F natural every time. That's because it doesn't see F# as part of the C natural scale.

If I were to change the default scale to G maj, it would place the note correctly.

But I have a note properties window that allows me to change many aspects of that note, and one is the precise position regardless of the scale.

Of course, Melodyne does makes that easier if you have it.

yup, Melodyne has already been mentioned multiple times, but I have to say that program does (almost) exactly what you want.

You can set the desired key and snap notes to it. You still have the libety to move notes around at will.... But, melodyne is basically an audio program, and you asked for a midi alternative.

Hmm,
I'm not particularly interested in a debate either, but I would say this:
Taking your "handle" at face value, may I suggest you be sure you aren't artificially limiting your options.

or,

"Use the best tool for the job". If you try hard enough, you can drive a nail with a screwdriver, but a hammer is much easier to use and will do a much better job.

As for my "best" comment, I simply meant that people, myself included, tend to use the tools they are familiar with rather than bother to learn new ones.

To give a personal example, the notation package I use is "Noteworthy Composer". I find it quick and easy, though it doesn't do some things as well as, say, Sibelius or Finale, but I find those packages far too unfamiliar to bother with... Thus they aren't as "good".

Forget it... Actually, not quite:

I almost didn't respond to your original post at all, because, despite the reasonable assumption given by your handle that you are interested in learning, my observations of previous posts suggest you are ONLY interested in forwarding your personal agenda and not interested in learning at all, probably because that would require you to consider ideas different to your own.

I'm sorry I bothered, be sure I won't again. It's not worth the effort.
