Hi all,

I did an interview recently with one of Australia's top Bass players, Michael Vidale and his studio partner Dave Dempsey. I asked them about how to get a great bass sound recorded in the studio. Check it out:

Recording Bass

So what do you guys do to record bass?

Any tips / tricks to share?

Cheers!

Nick

Thanks, enjoyed the read
The end was the best ..

"Dave: One more thing: Try to bring the tracks in around -12dbFS. The benefits of that will become obvious at mix time and even moreso at the mastering stage.

There's a great quote from Bob Katz (legendary Mastering Engineer): “It’s not how loud you make it, it’s how you make it loud”.

Tracking too loud doesn’t give you a final product that’s any louder, it just gives you a final product that might be loud but doesn’t sound so great."

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

I've been recording bass for my band for many years, and have done everything from running direct into the board, amplifier line outputs, amp mic'ing, various DI boxes in conjunction with amplifier mic'ing, etc.

Nowadays, the best sounding, most cost-effective way for us project/home recordists to capture bass seems to be with various software/hardware modelers (hardware-Peavey Vypyr VIP series/software-IK Multimedia's Ampeg SVX). I just auditioned the $129 Vypyr VIP1 amplifier this weekend, and was very impressed with how clean and usable the signal was. I like our bass sound to have nice meatiness/growl in the low mids, and the amp was surprisingly able to accomplish that with a little eq tweaking.

I continue to be impressed with how well new modeling and sampling technology is able to get us very close to commercial studio quality. Pair that with BIAB Realtracks, and the sky is really the limit in terms of what you can do at home!

Thanks guys,

Yep, amp modelling is pretty impressive these days. So many to choose from!

Best,

Nick
