I just submitted a support request but I thought I would also post in the forum.

I upgraded from Band In A Box and RealBand 2016 to the 2016 versions.

BIAB 2016 is working just fine, no issues. But with RealBand, the audio playback contains noise, crackling and distortion. I am using ASIO4ALL drivers and I am 100% sure it is not related to buffer sizes etc because Band In A Box, YouTube, FlStudio, SonyACid and every other audio-related applications plays back normally with no problems.

I have tried output through both my MAudio Audiophile 2496 PCI sound card and my Mackie Onyx blackjack USB recording interface. Both have the same result. Noise and distortion from RealBand playback, but not in any other audio related application, including Band In A Box. So adusting buffers is not the answer since everything else is working.

Also, I tried rendering a WAV out of RealBand. The WAV file does not have any of the noise or distortion. This seems to be a playback only problem affecting RealBand only. No other application has playback issues and even in RealBand, when I output the track to a WAV, the distortion is not present. If anyone has similar issues with RealBand, would love to hear your suggestions.

I meant to say I upgraded from 2012 to 2016.

I would have edited my original post but when I clicked the EDIT button, it said the maximum time for editing had expired. I tried my edit about 30 seconds after my original post.

today is not my day (sigh)...

I find that the problem does not occur when I switch to MME drivers instead of ASIO in RealBand audio preferences.

But I want to emphasize that Band In A Box does not have this problem. MME is a cumbersome workaround but I suppose I can live with it until the problem is fixed. I cannot monitor input with MME drivers.

So if someone at PGMUSIC can figure out why Band In A Box can use ASIO just fine, but RealBand generates distortion I would appreciate it. Even playing a VSTi instrument generates the distortion in RealBand, not just recorded material.

Bottom line is that RealBand has a problem with ASIO where the sound has lots of distortion. Band In A Box does not have this issue.

I was going to suggest the MME but you beat me to it. I could never get the ASIO drivers to work correctly in my setup.

thanks anyway for the tip.

I have not had a problem with ASIO in Band In A Box.

The driver is the one that comes with FLStudio12 but I think you can download it direct from asio4all.com

I have USB interfaces from Behringer and from Mackie. I also have a PCI soundcard MAudio Audiophile 2496. All of the inputs and outputs are recognized in both Band In A Box and RealBand. Sound quality is fine in BIAB. But as noted, playback in Realband gets a lot of noise and distortion

At least, the setting for MME is local to RealBand and does not force all my other apps to using MME.

Check the bit rate settings in RB, could be set to 48 kHz and everything else is set to 44.1 (or vice versa) or maybe a 16 bit / 24 bit mismatch.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Have you tried native ASIO drivers for your M-Audio Audiophile. That might help. Also, I would still look at buffer settings in RealBand versus BIAB. The two both support ASIO drivers, but I don't believe they handle audio the same way. It's worth playing with to see if it fixes your problem.

But if they are available, I would try native drivers first. While I can use my M-Audio FastTrack Pro with ASIO4ALL, it works much better with its native drivers.

the drivers that came with my MAudio card support only the card. I checked their website and there are no newer downloads than what I have.

I will try using the native MAudio driver in RealBand. The drawback is that with native ASIO, I can specify my Mackie and Behrenger USB interfaces as inputs and use them simultaneously, along with the PCI card if I want. The MAudio PCI card is used for output connected by RCA connectors to my stereo system and speakers. Using the MAudio driver, I would only be able to record through the MAudio card and not either of my USB interfaces. Still might be worth a try.

Even though I have owned RealBand since 2009, I have not really used it much, doing most of my work in FLStudio and BIAB. But now that I have upgraded, I had hoped to use RealBand a lot more. I can still generate the MIDI tracks I need and pull them into FLStuio12.

The noise I reported does not affect the output at all. So any WAV files or MIDI files created out of RealBand all sound fine when imported into other applications.

Remove ASIO4ALL from your computer and load, update and use the native ASIO driver that's supposed to be used with your soundcard/interface.

Disregard what other programs do. Use the proper drivers for them all. ASIO is what you need.

Understand that A4A is a wrapper and not a true driver. It fools MME into thinking it's ASIO and ditto on the hardware. But in many cases, some hardware isn't fooled and A4A doesn't work. I've never been able to get A4A to run on my computers at all.

It's also possible that the other programs are not using A4A but are defaulting to MME and will run fairly well on them in playback mode.

Unfortunately, ASIO is a single program at a time driver. So whatever grabs it first gets it. If you then open a second or third music program, they will not be able to use ASIO and will default to MME.

the only interface that provides a native ASIO driver is my MAudio sound card.

None of my other interfaces, Behrenger, or Mackie provide a vendor-supplied ASIO driver. I am not trying to use recording applications simultaneously. I know that trying to run FLSTUDIO for example and BIAB at the same time is just asking for trouble. I'm not a newbie. Been doing this since Windows95 was new.

I am certain that all my programs are using ASIO since I routinely record using one interface, then listen to playback using another. In FLSTUDIO, MME is not even a configuration option when you set up your audio drivers, I do not think it is defaulting behind the scenes.

thanks for the information but my experience with ASIO4ALL has been trouble-free for almost 10 years. So I cannot really see a benefit in removing what has worked for years on every application on my system except RealBand.

RealBand is the only application that has trouble and I have demo'd and/or purchased almost everything under the sun from Cakewalk to Reaper, Traction, Sonar, Ableton, Sony MusicStudio, PreSonus studio1 etc. etc. None of these other applications had any problems with playback noise in ASIO4ALL .

Since Band In A Box does not have any problems at all, nor do any of the other programs I use or have demo'd, I think the problem to be fixed is with RealBand, and it is not an ASIO issue.

In RB, you may want to check the Prefs-Audio-Drivers Button
Make sure it is indeed using the same driver the others are using.
Also click the 'Move selected device to top' button to make sure it gets assigned to the default.
RB can be a little finicky when selecting drivers.
