I didn't notice any problems at all, and I prefer the Vista interface. You will need to install BIAB as an administrator.

Thanks, Matt. Your reply caused another question. Why and how...on setting up BIAB as an administrator?

Appreciate the help.

Make sure you have:
  • 4 GB of RAM - 32 bit vista can't quite use it all, but the price of RAM makes the amount unavailable irrelevant. 64 bit vista will use it all.
  • Drivers available for your chosen sound card (and any other HW not standard with the PC) - especially if you go the 64 bit route
  • A REALLY fast HDD with plenty of free space and cache, spinning at least 7200 RPM and fast access times - vista is very resource hungry and this will help.
  • As fast a CPU as you can afford, not less than a dual core at, say, 2.5 GHz - again, this is for vista's benefit.
  • A good backup system that can capture system state and that you will use - in case (when) vista craps itself or some other disaster befalls you.

Lawrie makes a good point about having Vista drivers ready for your sound card, and also that external drive if it's older.

He also is giving some conservative recommendations for what is needed to run under Vista. He is clearly not a fan of Vista, but he is correct that you should buy the best PC you can afford. All I can say about Vista is that it runs fine on my five year old home built PC with a Pentium 4 CPU (single core) and 2 GB RAM. I do have fast new SATA hard drives, though, and for Real Tracks, I think that helps.

About the administrator, when you install Vista, it makes you designate one account as an administrator, which then has all privileges. You may then create user accounts, which may or may not have administrator rights. All I meant was that you should install BIAB while logged in as an administrator.

It's no problem running BiaB from a standard non-admin user account, though. When logged in as a standard user, it's usually possible to have an application, such as specifically an installation, running with admin rights - password needed here, yet no need to log in a complete session as admin. After installation I have no problems running BiaB from a standard non-admin Vista user account here.

That's helpful, Martin. I only mentioned it because there have been other threads every so often in which the answer appears to be that one should run as an administrator.

    Hi Jeff,

Although I currently run on Vista 32 I would not purchase it as things stand - if I had XP now I would keep it until Windows 7 was released

Windows 7 is in the wings and it runs faster and much more efficiently in comparison - it will even run as if it were running XP but with far greater stability

This means that running BIAB is just fine

From some of the infomation I have seen regarding Windows 7, it would appear that there is provision made to install and run XP applications.

    Hi Lyn,

You are correct - when open in Windows 7 you can call up an XP mode and then play XP applications in it

My next door neighbour is a beta tester on Windows 7 so we have loaded BIAB 2008 onto the machine and so far it works fine in both versions

It is looking to be the answer for the future

I like Win 7, but as of yet, do not have drivers for my sound card(s) so it's a bit hard to do a full test. Hopefully I'll get the RC installed on this computer on Wednesday, and we'll see what happens.

By the way, I'm running Vista 64 right now on a quad core AMD, 3Ghz, 4 GB of RAM, multiple hard drives (all new, all SATA) and am relatively happy with Vista. Because I have three sound cards in my computer, switching to what I want to use for different things is a pain sometimes, but it's really not that bad.

Gary, please keep us posted on your progress. Win 7 certainly sounds promising.

    Matt,
In the places I've used it, I've enjoyed it. Since I just purchased a full version of Vista 64 Ultimate for this computer, I'm reluctant to install the RC as my primary OS. I mean, I want to get my money out of it!

But, the RC will function until March of next year, when it will start to shut down every two hours. However, my sources are telling me that the Gold version should be out probably in July.

For those of you waiting for Vista SP2, it's coming, and it's called WIndows 7!

    G'day Gary,
as you've used the Win7 RC, can you confirm whether the UI has been changed to reflect what m$ did to Office 2007? I literally haven't had time to actually install any of the RC's we've had so I don't know other than that's what I read was going to happen.

If so can you revert to the "classic" UI the way vista allows? I ask 'cos I particularly dislike the ribbon thingy in Office 2007 - if I wanted a Mac I'd buy one. I DON'T want my windoze box to be an ersatz Mac.
