With my new computer, I can use an MP3 player for live playback at gigs - until now I had to put the mp3s on a CD and use a DVD player... which has spoiled me with it's 6" screen that displays song titles and allows me to scroll from song to song....Are there any MP3 players with a decent 'screen' size for gigs?
What do I need to do to utilize DXI/VSC? I assume these will result in better quality recordings...
Is the upgrade from '08 to '09 'worth' the cost?
THANKS!

Maybe a netbook? 8.6" screen or thereabouts. Not real sure how good their sound quality is though...

On the toolbar, select Opt.(ions), then MIDI/Audio driver setup. In the driver dialogue, check the Use VST/DXi synth box. Then select whichever version of the Roland VSC DXi you prefer in the dialogue box at upper right. If you select the VSC DXi in GM2 mode, be sure to select GM2 support at lower right as well.

I have a netbook. Runs fast. It, like my Vista box supports my old creative mp3+ player, there's one on ebay for $40.00 I like the fact that it has rca line out and line ins, is usb, plug and play ie. no drivers, though it's old and unsporrted mine has worked with 4 different computers I have without problem. It also has a headphone jack.
If you use the line in and the headphone jack recording is a snap with the Dxi synth. Sadly, that dxi won't work with vista, but the mp3+ box does, and without problems in all my apps.
The netbook runs band in a box from the external hd almost as fast as my new quad core hp with vista. If I was using it for gigs I'd shut off the wireless internet though.
I often use it to run band in a box where it sits on my accoustic piano and I futz around.

Hi dmrodes Firstly the upgrade to 2009 is well worth it IMHO Secondly if you have a new computer is it a Vista 32 as this allows you to use VSC DXi and improve on soundcard sounds Thirdly VSC DXi can be further enhanced with the following - BBE Sonic Maximizer plug-in software - http://www.bbesound.com/products/sonic-maximizers/d82.htmIf you are using a desktop for music creation then a SB X-fi Xtreme Gamer soundcard is great value as you can enhance the output further with a feature packed Music Creation panel - record "what you hear" and format into WAV - WMA and Mp3 jazzman

I run my laptop directly into my Roland cm-30 cube for practice at home. On gigs we use an Archos Jukebox. It has outside buttons and the screen is easy to read. I just transfer songs in and out, from the laptop, with a usb cable. It has a 20gb hd. There is a slight lag when you push "play". For the type of gigs we do, I like to have the songs in order. Since it's like an hd, you can have as many different folders as you need for organization. We use one for some standard tunes such as happy birthday. We bought a rebuilt one for $179. That's not cheap, but the new ones are around $500. It has the headphone outlet, dc-ac power in, and a usb port. I had tried using a Sansa media player, but it was too hard for me to use the pressure sensitive buttons and the screen was too small. I should add that we are amateur players and we don't do commercial gigs. FWIW.

I make a file that goes right into to I-tunes. Before I was recording to a CD burner and using PCDJ. That was a pain. My I-pod seems to have a big enough screen and during the playback the screen goes to the Clock which is handy if you need to keep track of your set times. Which is important to some of the Theme Parks I play in Florida. Eddie M
