I have owned the domain jazzmandan.com for many years, but long ago let it go to weed. I want to start over, something elegant but simple, no flash, no whatever that other technical mumbo jumbo is that finally caused be to give up on the effort. I got no time for that. Just want to have a simple presence to archive my music and a bit of my story.

Any recommendations??

Depending on the hosting service you use, I would seriously look into using Joomla:
https://www.joomla.org/
From what I recall (check it yourself, it's been a while for me and I could be wrong):
a) The hosting service doesn't need to have Joomla installed, you can simply upload the Joomla framework as your website and go from there.

b) You can also do your development on a local copy and it can be copied straight up without code alteration.

I wouldn't go with Go Daddy for music. I have a Go Daddy site www.thenashvillejazzcats.com The songs on the first 4 pages load without problem, but on page 5 where we have multiple songs, the songs take a long time to load. Go to my website and you can see for yourself how long it takes.

Bandcamp is great. It's also free. You can upload all the songs you want and there is no delay in playing them kensanders.bandcamp.com If you go to my link you can see how and where I put the bio on Ken.

If you go with Band Camp I would recommend that you convert your music to FLAC files as FLAC is CD quality. MP3's 48/256 klb isn't bad either.

Joomla is way too easy to hack. I hesitate to host that format anymore. Actually my initial response is 'no'.
YMMV

It looks like the replies don't get whether Dan is looking for software to create a site to them upload to a web host or a place to create a site online with just top down, uploading and place. Coffeecup is software to create the web page, but it has to live somewhere, and think about spending about $75 a year or so for hosting. GoDaddy has something "website tonight" but I never had a reason to look at it because while I hosted there, I did my own coding and just uploaded already coded pages. I already own a domain name, registered through GoDaddy, but currently have no need for a web page, so eastsideeddie.com is currently in "parked" status.

Dan,

I know your question was about websites and host but I wonder if you have a FB page? Keep in mind this is coming from someone who was dragged to FB kicking and screaming, but I get more interaction with my music FB page in one day than I do on my webpage in a year or so.

Now I keep the website, hosted by Go Daddy (with no complaints) and my site is built in Wordpress, which I also recommend.

Qualifier: I know very little about the entire process but what I recommended works for me. Others mileage may vary.

Later,

I've coded websites since 1994. My current one is hosted on Host Baby, an offshoot of CD Baby.

Recently, I was asked to assist in solving a problem on a church site. It used a system called Wild Apricot, designed for those who do not code. What a nightmare! I asked them if I could just fix the code myself and FTP the corrected pages to the site, and they said No. My point is, you can code yourself or contract with some service that allows you to make a web presence without coding. Just be aware that, if you choose the latter, it's very limiting.

Bandcamp is very good, and, as mentioned - FREE. Not a lot of design options like Coffeecup, but easy to use.

Strangely, given my industry, I wasn't aware of this - thank you for the heads up.

Ours was easy to create with weebly. I shot the photos and created the header graphic but other than that it was just drag and drop.

thanks for the suggestions folks - much appreciated. I did talk to a guy who knows a guy who says he will do me right for $xxx.

I already have the domain name which permits FTP and my editing is done in Adobe Dreamweaver (at least when I used to do HTML editing). The only thing I need is for someone to do the work for me. $xxx seems a small price to pay to get it done. I will let ya know when it launches....

Lawrie,
A recent fix was hacked within hours (and then again a day later), and I've decided to just shut down sites in this format and notify owners ..
Ya do what ya have to do.
In my recent experience Joomla sites have the least amount of up time before hacking than any other common format lately.
I would NOT recommend going with this format for a new site.
It can get ugly fast.

I've isolated our WP sites to a limited number of web servers and DB Servers .. and have simply shut down Joomla sites and declined hosting any new ones in the recent past.

YMMV, just my experience.
I know you are in the (relatively) same industry so thought I'd share my recent experiences.

I use Web Plus from Serif (www.serif.com) myself. It's not drag-and-drop simple but it's not difficult either, and the price is good. The work flow is surprisingly similar to a desktop publishing program, where I have a bit of experience, so it works for me.

Also allows the creation of a parallel mobile site for all those smart phone users out there.
