1. I have retired! It came early due to health reasons, but it happened. I now have time to pursue my interests and a little money coming in, so technically I'm good. More in a bit.
2. I am fortunate to live near a major city with prestigious colleges and universities. In fact, I live five miles from a school with a music program which includes theory, composition, and arranging. As a newly minted alter kacker I should be able to audit these courses for little or nothing other than the cost of books. I have wanted to pick this up since I left a small private school in New Orleans 40 years ago. Huzzah!
3. Unfortunately, the same issues that kept me from working get in the way of doing anything else, either. I am in treatment for all of my medical and psych issues, but one—major depression—just won't leave me alone. I have a great wife, my needs are taken care of, and I have my time to myself, but I have no energy or motivation—and I'm frankly angry about it.
There is hope. Emory University has a clinic that specializes in refractory depression that I am going to investigate. I know what I'm capable of; I had a brief, glorious breakthrough once when a particular course of therapy worked. It didn't last, though. A lot of progress has been made since then. If this works, it'll be like trading a horse-drawn buggy for a starship. God, I hope it does.

Coincidently, today is the second anniversary of my retirement from paid employment. Fortunately I put back enough money while I was working to be able to do pretty much anything I want to do. I still set the clock for 6:00 AM every morning and make sure I don't use the retired days to lie around and do nothing.

Congratulations. You do have something to look forward to.
I have no regrets and no problem passing my time doing useful things. You won't either.
I had not given it any thought before I saw your post but I did my career day job retirement 6 years ago today, 3/1/2010 and again from my part time pursuit (that had actually become full time) 3/1/2014.
The last few days have been really good for me; I celebrated a real birthday - 02/29 - leap year is my actual birthday and two retirement anniversaries a day later.

As Russ would say Good On You! Now with a little extra time you might think about playing some live gigs. Lots of enjoyment there my friend.
On a personal note when I retired I really started working, i.e. more gigs than ever and of course starting my own little company. But with all this I do manage to plan some days for doing nothing at all. Sort of like that song Willie sings, Today's My Lazy Day.
Best to you!

R. I'm just saying when you aren't on the clock anymore, it is pretty easy to lose all that free time sleeping in. I still plan my weekdays like I did when I was working, and just sleep in on the weekends. Week days I get up at 6, shower and shave, have breakfast, give some music lessons, work in the studio, cook dinner for me and the wife, etc., occasionally do some traveling with my friend Mike who is also retired.

Thank you for expanding on that, Keith. I keep a schedule, but what I face is deeper than that. I'm working on it.
