Scott gave some good advice, as have several others.
Remember, this is a journey.... it has a beginning and you have a destination in mind most times when you start. The goal is to learn new things along the way. Don't be in a hurry, stop and smell the roses. In the beginning try to learn one new thing every time you set down to record or write. Lots of progress is made early on, and as you progress you work on refining and perfecting those basics and molding them to your style and way of doing things.
Study the producers and the artists and the writers of the songs you really like. If you want to write like them, you have to do the same things they do in the same way they do it. There's no magic bullet to getting to that level. It's nothing but hard work, burning the midnight oil, pounding the pavements, and working with others who have the same aspirations, day in day out, week after week, month after month, year after year. One day you will wake up and realize that you can write and record some pretty cool stuff.
To help get you there.....You can find like minded souls in dedicated forums all over the internet.
Nashville songwriters association has thousands of songwriters hoping to write the next #1 country song. TAXI has folks interested in writing for film & TV and many are successful at it, Cakewalk and other DAW forums have folks interested in the recording and engineering aspect, and there are other forums devoted to just about any other topic related to music that you could think of.
Some of my influences were Neil Young, Willie Nelson, and Billy Gibbons. When you listen to my tunes, and my playing, you can hear those folks coming through because I spent thousands of hours over decades listening to and copying what they do and how they do it. Then, I used it to create my own style of playing, singing, and writing a song. The kind folks on the Cakewalk songs forum helped me refine my recording chops and waaaaa laaaa... here I are. Still learning and still growing and still studying this fun thing called music.

You can find my music at: www.herbhartley.comAdd nothing that adds nothing to the music. You can make excuses or you can make progress but not both. The magic you are looking for is in the work you are avoiding.

First, you are getting a TON of great advice! Take the time to really read what has been offered to you, and remember it takes time, and effort. A trap to avoid, that I see many fall into is, learning just enough to make a song and never really putting that little extra into taking it to a truly pro level. I have just been in the studio enough to see the "know it all" who never really get's "that sound"...and never will because they really don't know. They studio will gladly take your money either way. There's nothing wrong with not having a hit, being pro, or anything along those lines, of course, if that's not your goal! There are many degrees in between. I say, just know what you want and work for it...whatever that may be. That's where happiness is! If I can help in anyway, I am an PM away. I have preferred that method to public. You are on your way!

i now get there are a lot of people who make a song or album. i always thought the producer and that didn't do much. more like corporate big wig manager types. turns out they do plenty. i need to spend more time here and other places like this to figure this stuff out. local musicians don't seem to care where i am. just want to play songs and say there good enough. thanks for the websites. been checkin them out and it helps. who are the people here into production parts of songs? just thinkin it might be best to listen to there songs then i can ask them myself.

Go to the User Showcase and listen to some of the songs there. If there are some that you like ask the musician how they got there. You will find just about very genre of music there so I'm sure there is something there that you will like to learn more about.

Hi DGA. Just saw your post. I've been away on holiday for a couple of weeks. I was very tempted to get the VL 3 Extreme but I felt I had never used my V 2 properly, so I'm learning to use that at the moment. Also I had the Nova Guitar effects already and an unused Boss looper. I'll wait and see what comes out next at TCH. TCH never give any warning or hints, and I know if I bought the 3 Extreme, the next week they'd bring out a new product! It certainly would have been a lot easier to just plug everything into the VL3, but it has forced me to dig into BIAB a bit more. Lambada..., I got the VL3 ext as a gift from my family for my 60th birthday. My younger brother has a V2 and he uses it exclusively in his studio. Lots of bells and whistles there. I wanted the Extreme for the backing tracks feature. SO I could play my BIAB .wav files while I perform. NO need for a computer or iPod at the gig. The VL3ext holds 300 min of loops or backing tracks combined in its internal memory. I don't save loops I just use the looper and erase the loop. So 300 min of Backing Tracks is a lot. TCH was just purchased by The Music Group (Behringer) last quarter of 2015. So on their forum page they have a discussion thread called VL4 wish list or something like that. They said last year VL4 is a ways out due to that purchase "Don't expect a VL4 any time soon." But when they do announce or show the VL4 they are sure to drop the price of the VL3 at least $150.00 to $200.00. That is what they did with the VL3 when they announced the VL3ext.

Thanks DGA. Very interesting. I like the new Behringer gear, so that may be a win win for them. Did they also buy the TC Electronic division? I use the Nova and there has been no new multi-effects unit for a long time. I guess the pedals and G System are market leaders anyway. I might just take your advice and get the Extreme. It's just too hard setting all the gear live. Probably have to sell the stuff I never use.

All the internal guitar effects in the TC-H are TC electronics's

I had a weekend on the internet to spend some time on it. good stuff. really good stuff. the more i read the less i felt i know. its a different world.

We switched to PM,I didn't now how to do this, until I got one and asked that person how to do it. However, production for live gigs is a big part of what people are producing BIAB songs for.

dga i didnt know about pms either. i just got in the box now to see this from you "I sent you a long list of suggestions about production mixing which you never replied to. Now way down in the conversation, when 2 people start discussing their PRODUCTION for live gigs and the equipment they have in common you think its rude. DaClark I won't be giving you any more annoying and RUDE information". i wasnt tryin to start something. i was asking how it works cause i dont know. calm down. just tryin to figure out how things are done here. i did like the advice people gave and thought i covered it. maybe not good enough.
