Hi all...
I'm seriously thinking about moving on from Sonar to Pro Tools. However, I'm certainly NOT going to give up my Ketron SD2.
Nowhere can I find out if the SD2 is compatible with Pro Tools. I tried going to the Ketron site but their server must be down.
I'm sure you can understand that I want to make sure - before putting out a sizable amount of $$$ - that they will work together.
If someone could answer this for me it would be greatly appreciated.

It's difficult to imagine that the SD2 would not work with just about any DAW. It's a general MIDI device. It has a standard MIDI interface. If the DAW supports MIDI, it'll support the SD2 (unless you wanted integrated native support or some special purpose access).
There are 4 banks that can be accessed with MIDI Control Change messages.
Bottom line: yes, it definitely should work.

I don't have pro-tools, but I know this. As long as you have a MIDI port out of your computer (USB->MIDI is most common these days), I'd be extremely surprised if Pro Tools didn't recognize it.
As long as your DAW can recognize the MIDI port, any MIDI instrumet should work.

... Incidentally, could I ask why you're considering moving away from Sonar? What version of Sonar do you have. It certainly is an extremely powerful DAW.

But from what I have read Pro Tools is behind other DAWs when it comes to MIDI. If you do a lot of MIDI editing be sure to get as much information on Pro Tools and MIDI as you can find on the Internet. If you are having problems with MIDI editing in Sonar drop me a PM. I do a lot of that in Sonar.

And so... after doing extensive research I've come to the conclusion that my SD2 will not work with Pro Tools. I've searched the Pro Tools forums high and low and the SD2 isn't mentioned anywhere on the site. I've been to the Kentron site where it says that the SD2 works with "most popular DAWs," their example and recommendations mentioned are Cubase, Logic, Band-in-a-Box and Power Tracks.
As I understand it, I would need a Ketron "patch map" file like I need for BIAB (.ini) and Sonar (.ins) that are dropped into their respective directories. This allows said software to "see" the Ketron.
I'm using Sonar 8 which was pretty new the last time I was working on my music. But now after seeing how much new software stuff is out there now, my lowly version 8 seems to have gone the way of the Dodo bird.
That being said, it is still working fine for me and for what I'm doing with it. I was just thinking that maybe an upgrade to something newer would be nice now that I've been getting back into it.
The reason I was thinking Pro Tools is that I've been hearing for years that it is the software of choice for the pros, as a lot of pro studios are using it. In fact, I have seen this alot on YouTube. And finally, my brother-in-law has been using it for years and swears by it.
So, after all my research, aside from not being able to use my Kentron, I'm thinking that it might be overkill. I've decided that I'll be staying with Sonar... maybe upgrade it... and stay with something that I am somewhat familiar with. Thanks for the replies!!! Much appreciated.

You can't read too much into the fact that the Ketron isn't listed on their site. The SD2 is a very low production item compared Roland or Yamaha. Plus it's mostly used by folks wanting GM sounds which the average Pro Tools user could care less about.
Your SD2 will work fine it's no different than any other module or keyboard synth.
I understand your feeling about how lots of "pros" use PT. The question is are you really a pro who will be going into a commercial studio with your tracks? The cool thing about PT is you can put your home created PT tracks on a thumb drive and take them into a studio that also uses the big commercial version of PT and those tracks will plug right in. If you think you need that then it's something to look into. Otherwise any DAW will record just as well as any other DAW. The differences boil down to workflow and very detailed features that may or may not matter to you.

Booby, a "patch map" or .ins file has nothing to do the DAW seeing the software. You can use your Kenton just without a "patch map" you will have to learn where your sounds are in it. The first bank should be easy as I believe it is the GM bank, but the higher banks you may need to use cue cards to remember what is where.
From what I have read initially Pro Tools were in the pro studios because when it came out it was far better for recording audio then anything on the market. Now any high level DAW like Sonar, Cubase, Logic etc is just as good for recording audio as Pro Tools IMHO. The biggest difference is in MIDI. Again from what I have read Pro Tools still hasn't caught up yet. YMMV

Moving to PT was just a thought. I think the biggest reason I'm not going to make the move is the learning curve that would be involved. I don't think that what I'm doing musically warrants such a big undertaking. So it looks like Sonar is here to stay.

Well… I've been having a lot of fun in Sonar for the past few hours. OK… really, it wasn't fun.
I pulled my old Roland JV-1010 out of the junk drawer the other day and started thinking about how neat it would be to use it along side of my Ketron SD2. I got the patch map file I needed and then imported it into Sonar without a hitch. I got myself an M-Audio MIDISPORT 2X2 midi interface that would give me the connections I need to hook up the two modules. Sonar recognizes the new interface, no problem.
In Sonar's MIDI setup, I have channel 1 assigned to my Ketron's 16 MIDI channels – with channel 10 assigned to the Ketron drums.
In channel 2 I have all 16 MIDI channels assigned to the Roland.
In Sonar, I insert a new MIDI track to channel 1. From there I set the in/out to the MIDISPORT A. I then choose the Ketron, a Ketron bank and then a patch. Everything works as it should
There's a button on the front of the MIDISPORT that when pushed in, gives me “USB Merged” - A and B in/outs are merged together - and when it is out it gives me “MIDI Thru”- A and B in/outs work separate of each other, Ketron in “A” and Roland in “B”.
With the button set to “MIDI Thru”, the Ketron set in channel 1 and connected to the “A” in/outs, everything is fine.
With the button set to “MIDI Thru”, the Roland, set in channel 2 and connected to the “B” in/outs, I get nothing. When I push in the button to “USB Merged” I notice the little light flashing on the Roland, telling me that the signal is in fact going from my keyboard controller into the Roland, but there's still no sound.
The track settings are as they should be when I go from one to the other… the Ketron on channel one and the Roland on channel 2. But there's just no sound coming out of the Roland.
I have gotten the Roland to work on it's own so I actually do know that it does still work, even if it is old.
I'm really thinking that I'm missing some other setting somewhere within this mess. I'm also hoping that I have explained my situation clear enough so that you'll be able to get some kind of picture of what it is I'm trying to do. If need be, I'll be glad to give you any other info you might want.
Any suggestions would be so greatly appreciated.
