Milt,

You might want to check out the click track feature, too.

Thanks, Noel, I'll look into that. Now if I can only get realband to regenerate some tracks!

Try...

1. Click on the track.

2. CTRL+A to select all the track.

3. Right-click on the track and look at the 'generate' options in the right-click menu that pops up.

That should do the job for you.

You may want to edit that again so the PC Police don't hassle you.

Ritard..... short for ritardando.

The musical term is spelled with an "i"... Ritardando.... often abbreviated as "rit"....

I do all my Rit in BB. It's really easy to go into the measures/bars and edit the beats per measure and the tempo. Once you enter that info into the BB structure, any and all tracks you generate in RB will follow that rit.

When I need to slow down at the very end of the song, I usually do it this way....

Given that: a ritarded ending normally happens in 2 measures of the song..... assuming a 4 beat measure ....and normally at the end.

So I add several measures.... make them all 2 beat measures..essentially, I'm having BB use two 2 beat measures to do what it used to do in one 4 beat measure....... extra measures after the hold allow for a smooth decay of the final held chord.

Now, lets say the song is at 120BPM... the first 2 beat bar is 110, the next is 100, the next is 90, the next is 80. The last note is held so tempo doesn't matter. I'm using 10 BPM as the slope.... you can do more or less to taste.

The steps down are large enough that you can hear and feel the tempo change and the 2 beat measures are short enough, so that it doesn't feel jagged slowing down. You don't want the changes to sound like steps. You want it to sound like a smooth tempo change to the stop.

One of my songs...Dust on the Floor ... uses this method. http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=13017714

I've used this same technique in several songs.... you need to experiment to see what size tempo drop works best and sounds smooth. Same thing applies to the beats per measure but I've found that 2 beats at each new slower tempo generally works exceptionally well.

You don't normally want to carry the ritardando out over a longer time frame than just a few measures for it to be effective and sound normal.

"retard" my bad! Thanks hacker for the detailed 'how to'. I tried this ritard ending in BIAB, and it worked. I may just try to import the last 4 bars of the song from BIAB into RB and see if that works. I always export the tracks from RB into Reaper for doing vocals and any midi and audio editing. I can do the ritard there.

milt,

Also...

Just in case you are not aware, there are actually two main types of slowing down in music. Whichever one an arranger/composer chooses depends on the circumstances. Both of these can (unfortunately) be abbreviated to 'rit.'

The two types are...

1. Ritardando (also known as rallentando)
This is abbreviated to rit. or ritard. (and rall.) and means to gradually get slower.

2. Ritenuto
This is usually abbreviated to rit. and means to suddenly get slower. That is an immediate change from one tempo to the new tempo without any gradual slowing down.

Method 2 is the way BiaB does it: bar by bar (not beat by beat which would be a vast improvement). This request is buried down there somewhere also for the BiaB wishlist.

Since this is the RB forum .. if you open the Tempo window there is a Fill option, which will insert a series of gradual changes in the Tempo Map, making it not a sudden change.. but rather a gradual one.

Thanks Rharv, I found that window and it does indeed work, but the real tracks that I regenerated after making the ritard are all sounding like they are pedaling 8th notes in the sustain. It's like I'm hearing loop points. The tracks that I generated yesterday sound fine, just the ones I regenerated today are having this problem. It's only happening on real tracks, not the midi tracks. Solved the ritard probem, but opened another. Any idea on what this might be? Thanks guys!!

Maybe resolution is too course?
Also I think I recall a recent update mentioned attention to a 'stepping' effect for this.
Are you on the latest build? Just a thought..

rharv, if I may prevail upon you one more time, when you say resolution, what exactly are you referring to? I have the latest build, Thanks again for your time!

Try
Options (top menu)
Then click Resolution. If at 120 it may induce 'stepping' effect.
Changing the Resolution, then regenerating (using the new more concise resolution) may help.
Or it may be an effect you have on the tracks (trying to adjust to the volume changes) that is causing this .. hard to say without an example.

What you mean by "all sounding like they are pedaling 8th notes in the sustain" is kind of unclear here.
