Hi

I am new to BB and I think I might accidentally have clicked something in one of the many menus (cant remember which) that generated wav files out of wma files of one of my realdrums sets.

Is there a way to revoke this or can I simply just delete those wav files to save space on my HD.

Thanks

It sounds like you clicked on one of the two buttons I've highlighted below. These are found in the Realdrum preferences. (The fly-by notes explain in a little more detail.)

If you have a wma file and a wav file with EXACTLY the same name (the only difference being .wav and .wma), then it should be safe to delete the wav files. As a precaution before deleting, transfer all the .wav files to another folder that has a completely different name (say, c:\temp).

If all the Realdrums still play correctly after the wav files have been moved to this new folder folder then it is safe to delete the .wav files because BIAB is using the .wma Realdrums.

Regards,
Noel

If I remember correctly (since it's been awhile), when RealTracks were first introduced, they had to be WAV files. Then as they number grew, to save space, they were distributed as WMA files and extracted to WAV as you used them. Also, until the Elastique Pro integration came along, you had to have a whole lot more of them to avoid artifacts when generating parts.

So, having the WAV files is mostly left of from that time; however, WAV files also generate a little faster than WMA files, so there is that benefit. With faster computers now and the quick generation feature of BIAB, that's mostly a moot issue.

The RealTracks engine will look for WAV files first and use them if it finds them; otherwise, it will look for WMA files and use those instead (natively now, so they don't have to be converted to WAV anymore).

That being said, the Audiophile version uses the native, not previously compressed WAV files.

John when are the .wav files generated? Are they only generated when you Drag and Drop or open the SGU file in RB? Or are the WMA files used in RB and only generated to .wav files when you render the tracks.

WAV files result when you render from RealBand (or BIAB), but that's the result of the program generating the audio. The programs no longer convert the RealTrack WMA's to WAV any more, as they can be read natively by the apps.

That being said, what gets brought into the RealBand track I believe is a WAV file and when you save the SEQ file, it will contain the full audio of the tracks. But using RealTracks no longer generates WAV files corresponding to the WMA RealTrack file, unless you specifically push the button to make it do so (as accidentally happened here).

Hope that made sense.

You can verify this by looking in your Temp Audio folder (a setting in RB Prefs)
I generated a few 37 second tracks and they are about 6 meg and saved as WAV files .. these are what Undo feature relies on .. so I'd venture to say it is uncompressed audio once it gets generated. (image below)
Granted, this is in RB, but it uses BB generation ..

Another point, I believe using this folder efficiently adds a bit of stability and speed to RB.
So much so I use a separate drive with just a folder labeled Audio Temp ...
I have 6 large reliable drives and 1 of them has the single job of handling Temp Audio location. This is where track generations, any edits, and incoming (recording) audio gets stored until a Save routine happens.
It jumps around a lot, and if it is the same drive as your OS (default install) you can lighten the load on RB very easily.

There's a couple more layers to how RB handles temp files and saves, but the above should show RB does use wav format..
