I'm working up a solo guitar track for a rock song, and using Search/Replace to go over the song so I don't have to change each and every chord. And I cannot change, for instance, Em to Em5, or A7sus to A7sus5. The latter isn't as much of a problem, but the former is, a bit: The key of the song is not E but G. I'll work it out one way or 'tother, and if necessary simply replace all the E5s (that should be Em5s) with G5s, but... is there something here, either in music theory or BIAB convention, that I'm missing?

The 5 does not make sense as it is implied as part of the chord. An Em chord has E G B by default. BIAB, with a Jazz style will often add a 7th (D) and a 9th (F). If you want the Em chord without the 3rd (G), that is another story. Now Em7b5 and Em7#5 do specify what to do with the 5th but unless it is spelled out, the (perfect) 5th is implied.
If you a changing the key to the song, just use the transpose function. No need to replace everything.

Hi, Rachael!  Pleased to meet you. I haven't been around the forums much over the past several months -- just busy 'n' stuff. It might be that you don't understand how BIAB and RealTracks handle some of the guitar solos. A "5" chord has nothing to do with fifths. Several RealTracks, particularly the Metal guitars, solo over the key of the song rather than the individual chord changes... unless you label the chord with a 5. So, in my song written in G, the soloist will solo over the entire song in G, no matter that it hits, say, an E-minor. Unless I label it as "Em5"... which I can't, BIAB won't accept that. So I have to label it either "E5" or "G5", depending on how I want it to sound. But it's playing over an E-minor. Multiply this by a whole bunch of chord changes, and it sometimes involves a lot of tweaking to get the sound I want. Which is what my minor grumbling is about.

My apologies. It seemed like a easy theory question. Not ever playing around the Soloist the way you do, I read a little about it. Yes, I can hear your grumbling now. Interesting stuff but a strange way to handle the issue. I hope someone can solve your problem.

Hi Tom,
Yes, the Rock guitar "Metal" solos (RealTrack) solo over the key of the song, unless the chord is a '5' chord.
But you can change the key of the song at any bar (using the F5 dialog). So if you want to preserve an Em7 chord, but have the Metal soloist change to an "E" based solo, you could enter a change of key at that bar (to E or Em - they both result in 'E' soloing).
So there are 2 ways to change the soloing
- use of '5' chords (affects that chord only)
- change of key (affects chords from that point on)
And as mentioned, this only affects Metal Guitar Realtracks Soloists - other styles and soloists always follow the specific chords and key.

Ah! Thank you, Peter. I hadn't thought of changing the key bar-by-bar. Although it still seems like a little much work. Hm. I shall have to think upon this. Anyway, again, many thanks. And, no problem, Rachael. I can see why they used the 5, for exactly the reason you mention -- entering it to define the chord would be redundant.
