I am in the process of shopping/purchasing another PC. I currently have Win 7 and been contented with its use and results.
Two things do concern me.
1. Legacy software I'm using ??????? not PG goodies.
2. Win 10 HOME version comes with the PC.
95% of my work is with music goodies.
Are you using Win 10 HOME ? If you are is it doing the work you want accomplished.
Thank you in advance.

Last weekend I bit the bullet and purchased a new, convertible, laptop. It's running Windows 10. I only want it for my music stuff, including BIAB and RealBand. I took some time to lookup things online, to make the new machine work for me, like getting rid of the clutter etc. on the opening screen.
I just now, today, got everything working the way my "old" Win 7 machine worked. So far, I'm happy with Win 10 and, like you said, I'll avoid OS obsolesence for a few years.
Good luck! LLOYD S

There are lots of apps to make win10 look and feel more like 7. Rather than go straight to 10 I just put it an another drive while I set it up and try it out - this way I still have 7 I can boot from or 10. If you are getting a new win10 pc you can still put your win7 drive in it also, so if win10 gives you grief just boot on win7. Install Microsoft Fix it 50470 on win7 before moving hard drive to new pc hardware https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/922976You can also clone it.

Interesting.
Is there a way to put XP on an external drive?
If so how do I boot from it?
I have a sequencer that works in Win8 but works better in XP, and I'm reluctant to go to Win10 because it might not work at all anymore.
The XP computer is no longer on-line, and it's an early 2000 machine, so it won't last forever.
However, I feel I need to go to Win10 because they will quit supporting 8.1 and that would leave me vulnerable.

I have upgraded a number of computers to Win 10 with no problems. I have just up graded my music computer to Win 10 Pro. I have had no problems with PGMusic software and only a couple of glitches with my other music software that I have corrected. I did not loose anything during the upgrade.
As far as legacy programs I have found that Win 10s compatibility mode to be very good. In fact I have an old Win 95 photographic program up and running on it as well as MS Office 97. The only program that we lost was an old game my wife played on Win 7 so games may be a problem. I don't know as I don't have games on my systems. I made her happy as I found another Win 10 Mahjong for her. YMMV

"Is there a way to put XP on an external drive?" Yes, It should boot if not you may need to change the Boot type in the BIOS from UEFI to Legacy, the newer machines will do it automatically - also in the BIOS, SATA Mode from AHCI to IDE. You can use EasyBCD for a boot menu http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/OS-Enhancements/EasyBCD.shtmlYou can clone the XP drive from the 2000 machine first, to an SSD if you like. If you want to use it externally rather than in a hard drive bay, you should use it on an esata connector or put an esata pcie card in if you don't have one. VirtualBox is another option, I think you can transfer the XP drive to a virtual drive and it will still run quick under VB. https://www.virtualbox.org/
