hi all,
i've just upgraded to 2016 and i've got a small problem. when i open any new saved song the song does not "automatically" play after being double clicked on. It loads in and all the instruments and chords and all are there but i have to hit the play "arrow" to get the song to start. definitely was not that way, for me anyway, on 2015. don't know if something in my preferences got changed with the update or if this is something new in this version or is this a glitch in the latest release.
as i said, it's a small problem but it seems strange.
any help would be appreciated.
john

Hi john, When you say when i open any new saved song the song does not "automatically" play after being double clicked on. It loads in and all the instruments and chords and all are there but i have to hit the play "arrow" to get the song to start. In both 2015 and 2016 versions you can use the " transport bar " ( extreme left hand side ) or from the drop down menu " Play " to start your song playing. I can not recall that in the 2015 version the song would " automatically " play. I still had to hit the play " arrow ' in the transport bar or go the drop down menu " Play " to start my song playing. Actually the drop down menu " Play " has far more choices and of course they are " hot key " coded. For example Command + A to play and generate a song. ( My comment: it still puzzles me how MR PG came up with using the letter " A " for play but i know that it has been that way for more then 30 years that i have been using this programme ) Anyways, those are my thoughts and more then likely completely missed your question/concern. Just blame it on Mr Magoo - (w)

thanks for your input on this. i appreciate it but i'm certain that it was always playing the song for me when i selected it....i never had to hit any buttons, arrows or anything else. i'm a very long time user as well and this is the first i've seen of this. hopefully, someone from biab will weigh in on this when they see it and clear it all up.
thanks again, john

I found my 2015 Mac BinaBox USB drive and it does not automatically start playing a song selected/loaded. Had to use the transport bar play button or select play from the drop down menu.
Searched the preferences and can't find a setting to toggle on or off automatic play after a song is selected/loaded. There is a repeat play but that is something different.

thanks, it appears to be just you and i on this thread til business opens on monday. i hear you. i tried to go back to my 2014 version but it's gone now and sadly, my 2015 version was written over by my upgrade to 2016 but the fact remains for me anyway, the songs did, in fact, start automatically.... who knows maybe it was a glitch in my setup but i gotta tell ya, i loved it and was totally used to it. i use biab alot. when i don't have to hit extra keys, that's a very very good thing.
thanks again, and i would love to hear others input on my very little "drama" here.

Actually you posted a good question/problem with the 2016 version.
I would also love to hear others chime in on your question and at the same time set me straight on my findings.
Hears hoping to get an answer soon.

i use biab alot. when i don't have to hit extra keys, that's a very very good thing. Agreed. In BIAB 2015 (which I just double-checked) songs did not automatically start playing when opened from the file menu, however they did automatically start playing when you click on the "Prev" and "Next" button. That is still the same in BIAB 2016. Is it possible you forgot that it only auto-played when you used those buttons? In addition, songs were automatically generated and auto-played when you selected a new style in BIAB 2015. That is unfortunately not the same in BIAB 2016 and the auto-play has been disabled. I think that in both cases these should be a user preference. I could understand how some users might not want a song to auto-play until they've pressed the PLAY button. But I agree with you that it is great when it just starts playing as quickly as it can, since most of the time I am sitting there waiting to hear the song I have loaded and don't want it to wait for more input from me. Hopefully they can add the preferences so that users can choose what they want. But regardless, BIAB SHOULD NOT wait to generate the audio for a song style just selected or a non-frozen song just opened. Even if it doesn't auto-play, it should NOT be waiting to generate the audio because then the song will not be ready to play when you actually press the PLAY button and thus you have to wait even longer. Right now, when you either open up a non-frozen song with the file menu or select a new style for a song, the song will not auto-play AND the song audio will not be generated, which is very inconvenient because it forces the user to wait unnecessarily... twice. I really hope this can be fixed ASAP.

hi zedd, thanks for your very thorough reply. hopefully, the moderators of this forum will read your comment and reply.
honestly, i can't imagine why anyone would want to open a file and have it load into biab, load the instruments, chords etc. and then NOT HAVE IT PLAY? to me, it made perfect sense doing what it always did for me. double click on the biab file that i kept on my desktop and it loaded and played. simple. as a matter of fact, i can't really think of any other program on the mac that DOES work that way. think about it. If you have, for the sake of this conversation, a Microsoft Word document called "MYResume" on your desktop and double click on it to open it, it doesn't just open Microsoft word, it opens the Microsoft Word AND "MYResume".....
why would biab be any different?

to me, it made perfect sense doing what it always did for me. double click on the biab file that i kept on my desktop and it loaded and played. simple. I just tried that in both BIAB 2015 and BIAB 2016 and indeed you are correct. Opening songs by double-clicking them causes them to play automatically in BIAB 2015 and not in 2016. It's still something that should be a preference set by the user. No matter which of the 3 (or more) ways are used to open a BIAB file, the song should either auto-play or load itself (and generate it's audio) so that it is ready to PLAY according to how the user has set their preferences. I could understand how some users might not want auto-play. Maybe they want to load a song while they answer a phone call or go to the restroom. But I'm sure that most of us would probably prefer auto-play since that gets things going as quickly as possible. I still find myself waiting for auto-play when I load up a new style. as a matter of fact, i can't really think of any other program on the mac that DOESN'T work that way. think about it. If you have, for the sake of this conversation, a Microsoft Word document called "MYResume" on your desktop and double click on it to open it, it doesn't just open Microsoft word, it opens the Microsoft Word AND "MYResume"..... BIAB 2016 does still load the song if you open it that way. It just doesn't play it. Using your analogy, for Microsoft Word to behave the same way as BIAB the words of your resume wouldn't actually appear on the page until you pressed the "SEE" or "READ" button. That would indeed be a silly and unnecessary extra step.

Hey John,
Since I'm not sure that Andrew will see your message until Monday, I did learn that your double-click-play issue has been attended to and should be working again in the next public build. Apparently some other things discussed in this thread have also been addressed.
Great news, huh?
Have a great weekend!
Zedd

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!
Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.
Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
