Hi, I was at a jam yesterday with 4 people in total and the person running it also uses BIAB. We were using BIAB to provide the drums. He has 2016 UltraPack with the external disk drive and Windows 10. It crashed on him twice (it locked up). It did it both times when the program was generating the real tracks. I was thinking of replacing my 2012 BIAB with exactly the same thing on a new notebook computer I have yet to buy. However I would be using it for live Karaoke type jams in a restaurant/bar so I can't put up with crashes. He thought it was probably Win 10. I am thinking of having Win 7 installed on my new notebook/laptop to run BIAB 2016 (and I may actually have to do that if certain other software will not run properly with Win 10). Does anyone have any thoughts on 2016 running on Win 10 or on Win 7?

Thanks,
John

No crashes here with Win 10 either. It sounds like your friend should look into his drivers as they can cause a lot of problems. Also have him/her look at want is running in the background. I have had no problems with any programs running in Win 10.

No issues running BIAB 2016 on Windows 10. I couldn't get it to work on my Windows 7 Pro OS, however, I believe there was something corrupted in my registry. So either platform should work.

Personally, I prefer Windows 10. It's not as bloated and is much faster.

I run it on Win 7 Ultimate 64 (desktop) and on Windows 10 64 (laptop). I've never had a crash or lockup as you described.

Could it be a USB connection on the external drive. I'd be looking for something like that. Something that could introduce a reliability issue.

I am running Band-in-a-Box 2016 with Windows 10 and I am experiencing strange crashes when running the program. I don't know if this is due to Windows 10 or BiaB?

Plus, there are still some small bugs in the new BiaB version concerning the printing of lead sheets with lyrics but, other than that, it seems to be working OK with Windows 10.

Hi Graham,

The support guys are working on the lyric issue.(I believe I mentioned this earlier, so please excuse the repetition!)

Hopefully we'll see a patch soon.

Thanks guys. Since the license allows me to run it on a notebook and desktop I guess what I will do is run it on the notebook with Win 10 to see what happens and also run it on my desktop with Win 7. If it runs well under Win 7 but gives problems on Win 10 I will install Win 7 on the notebook. I will post back with the results of this.

The best way to make a laptop work for music is to tweak it for the task ahead. There are many tutorials and articles on-line on how to properly do it. But the best you can do to your computer is, IME, using Win 10 since its inception, is the following: get a SSD HD and it'll be as foolproof as it can be. Never had a crash or even a glitch, ever! And I've made well over a thousand live performances with a laptop, Win-based rig, and counting. wink

So, if BIAB crashes, it most probably is User Error. Get used to it! cool

When you say it crashed while generating the realtracks,
have you stoppe the song bevor loading the next?

I had crashes on Windows 10 with BB2016 when i repeated the following a view times:
1. Loading a song an press Play
2. while the song is still playing, open the load sond-dialog-box and load another song.
3. The playing song stopes and the new song is loadad and is starting to generat the realtracks and imediatly after finishing generating, the new song starts to play.

When you repeat this a a couple of times (on my machine about +-15x), BB crashes with a memory vaiolation.

Support told me this is not the way BB should be used.
But it worked that way in older versions without a crash and was very handy when quickly change from one song to another, especially when checking out a library of songs, not built by myself.

Wheter this is a User Error or not is open to question. From my point of view:
If a Programm can not handle a functionality in a specific situation or status of the Programm, the the GUI should not allow the user to select this function.

Since I now open and start playing songs only when i stop the previous song, the memory-vaiolation does not occur anymore.

Thomas

Thomi, you are quite correct. If the user should not do/repeat a particular function, then the program should not crash. It should detect and handle the error condition, (optionally give an alert message), and stay operating.

Memory and Access Violations are detectable events. Perhaps programmatical use of Critical Sections can avoid these type of situations from occurring.

It would be great if the program could be really robust.
