Help. I use holds often, but ran into a problem. I’m sure there’s a work-a-round. I’m not a trained musician, so I’ll explain as best I can.
For simplicity, the only instrument I’m using is 2504 Piano with held chords. In a 4/4 song, 65 tempo, there are 4 particular bars.
(1) G C (2) Am D (3) No chords (4) G Am
Bar 1 has 4 beats, with G for beat 1, and C for beat 3. Bar 2 has 4 beats, with Am for beat 1, and D for beat 3. Bar 3, I changed beats from 4 to 2, with no chords, so the D continues for this bar. Bar 4, I changed the beats back to 4, with G for beat 1, and Am for beat 3.
That plays fine, but I want to hold the D in Bar 2/Beat 3, so that Bar 3 is silent for its 2 beats. When I input “D…” in Bar 2/Beat 3, the D holds, Bar 3 is silent (for its 2 beats, which is what I want), but the G in the 1st Beat in Bar 4 is also silent, then the Am plays normally and the song continues at 4/4.
What am I missing?

PacoAlpha,
Try putting a chord on beat 3 in bar 3. Because the bar is only 2 beats, it won't matter what the chord is since beat 3 will not play.
This solved my problem which sounds similar to yours.

OK, I'll bite.
Why?
Why didn't Paco's song work? Why is this workaround, that I would never have guessed, necessary? Has it been reported to PG Music?

I have no idea why it works, Matt. With the increased PG Music presence on the forums, I imagine that they have read this, now.

Yes, and I'll bet there's nothing in the Help on this either (typing and ducking at the same time)

The issue is not tied to the 2/4 bar change. We already got the same issue with Strings some months ago :
To enable Strings to mute during a rest bar, change the name of the chord of the rest bar : /C… /C.d : The strings won't mute in bar#2 /C… /Cm.d / The strings will mute in bar#2.
I hope PG will output a fix about this annoying issue. Furthermore, using this workaround, we get a wrong chord sheet, because in the last example, we introdure an unwanted Cm just to mute the Strings.

Hi Paco,
It looks like Band-in-a-Box isn't taking the time signature change on bar 3 into account when calculating the length of the held chord. It's seeing that the hold is for a bar and a half in a 4/4 song, so is holding for 6 beats instead of 4.
Thanks for the detailed explanation of the issue, I'll make sure it gets reported right away.
Thanks Kent PG Music

Hello Kent, What I said in my previous post is that the issue is NOT related to time signature change. In the example I gave, the time signature 4/4 is NOT changed. So IMHO, don't waste time in this direction to fix the issue. See my first thread about this issue Holds Strings dated 02/11/2015. The issue was confirmed by other users.

Hi John-Luke,
This appears to be a different issue, there's no rest in Paco's example.
This issue is definitely related to a time signature change, but I'll check out your other thread and make sure that issue has been reported as well.
Thanks Kent PG Music
