I am about too upgrade my microphone and been doing a lot of research on the internet.

Then I thought I've listened to all the songs posted on the forum , who best to ask.

I then can compare what I have heard, to the microphone used on the song... it would help me a great deal.

And would be a good discussion .

I use the built-in ++ electret condenser microphone ++ on my Zoom MRS-8 digital multi-track recorder most of the time. I've used it enough to be able to obtain good and predictable results using it.

I like the sound of my vocals on a ++ Samson USB Go Microphone ++ . It adds more high end than the electret microphone. It can sound a little harsh and seems to have a very small sweet spot but it is a surprisingly good sounding microphone.

One "trick" I've found that works well for me is to use a loaded clothes closet as an isolation or vocal booth. A bunch of clothes can really knock down on sound reflections.

Depends on the vocalist
On myself I prefer an SM-57
One of my favorite vocalists I work with prefers I use an SM-58
My daughter and a friend of her's prefer a Behringer B1 (and I lean toward this on lead vocals for unknown or new lead vox)

Lots of good mics out there.
Personal preference is a personal thing!

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

On the three songs I posted in the Xtra styles comp.:

Behringer XM8500 ( at $35 a steal although I`m finding levels hard to get right for upfront vocals)

AudioTechnica ATR 2500 for all others I`ve posted on the forum-( sound is fine, I was very frustrated by the latency issue with a usb mic)

You might get more response if you ask this question directly when commenting on forum songs.

I'll chime in...

I use an CAD Equitek E-100...paid 300$ (new) as a 1996 Xmas present to myself from a music store I'd traded with since 1975....20 years old this Xmas.
http://recordinghacks.com/microphones/CAD/equitek-E100
(Gold and black)

I tested it with three other mics (Sennheiser and one 2 other popular brands I can't recall) and picked this one easily.

Personally, I'd recommend testing some mics prior to purchase and not let price be main criteria. (Ideally, tested on your playback system)
You'll want it to sound good on your voice.
Cheap mics can sound grainy and have a sense of less presence....so listen carefully during test.
My Equitek is flat but with a 2db bump at 4k which works well for my voice.
Frequency rolls off to -10db to 20K....irrelevant to me.
(It's the one I used on all my soundclick tracks)
I love this mic but you'll you'll have a plethora of choices to choose from during your research.

Dynamics...I have a 1/2 dozen SM57's and an old Shure Unisphere I from 1973.
Can't beat them as well proven tools.

Hope that helps....back to it.....

The most versatile dynamic mic is the Sennheiser MD421. "Professional Audio Review" did a shoot-out on a dozen dynamic mics under $800. They compared vocals, brass, percussion and other instruments. The 421 came out first in every category but one, where it came in second (micing a guitar cabinet) to a Sony.

I've had my 421 since the 1980s. My partner has gone through and SM58 and two AT mics since then and then bought another 421. My old one still sounds as good as hers.

There is no proximity effect, a flat bandwidth that cane be rolled off on the bottom with an on-board filter, and can take very high sound pressure levels.

If you want to go dynamic, I can't think of a better choice.

Nothing but a MXL and a Rodes NT1. Both are outstanding versatile phantom powered condenser mics. And the MXL can be found for less than a hundred bucks.

Colly on my songs I use either my old Shure SM58 or my Gauge ECM-87 (from Rob Chiarelli's company - http://gauge-usa.com) It depends on the song and how noisy things are when I'm recording.

The Shure is dynamic stage mic that rejects more noise. The Gauge sounds great and is a steal for the price. It picks up more extraneous room noise (computer fan, etc.,) so I use 2 rolling plastic garment racks from Walmsrt with old comforters tossed over them as a makeshift vocal booth.

Good luck.
