One can only begin to imagine the horror of the Gulag, the forced laborer system under Stalin
I thought what could have kept a man sane under such inhuman conditions and it came to me, maybe it was love, the truly unbreakable force left to man.
Knowing that there was someone back home loving you and yearning for your return, even death could not diminish that bond.

I tried to place myself there and so I wrote this song.

This is a very interesting song theme indeed.
And definitely something else than a regular love song.
The vocals are very nicely done. The'stronger than their guns' part almost makes me think of a protest kind of song ;-)

Good work!

Paddy,

An interesting idea for a write - and well done.

The vocal is strong - your best (as already mentioned). The instrument mix seems low in comparison, so you might lower the vocal level just slightly to set it in.

Again, a strong write! And a cool band!

Paddy,

This is very good - strong enough to communicate the feeling even if the listener doesn`t know the subject that inspired you.
I like the way you used repetition throughout and the hypnotic backing ( sad, with a good rhythm) suits the song very well.
I agree with Floyd about taking the vocals down a little - they are really strong though - one of your best!

Paddy,

Excellent subject matter and a well written song.

Love the strong vocals, especially the way you mix it up with doubling and echo at various points.

One of your best,

Paddy, I liked the doubled vocal. An unusual subject but the backing really fits. Please post the lyrics. The vocal did seem too hot. I enjoyed it. Tom

This is really good Paddy. Your vocal is strong and I also like the effects that you added to them. I also agree that they are to hot.

Thanks Rob and Anne –Marie.

In a way your correct Rob, it is a protest song, so many imprisoned for so called ‘political crimes’ but guns will never stop people from wanting freedom and democracy
So this is my little bit of Bob Dylan wishes in the mix

Love the dreamy feel of the band and the melody Paddy!! Really nicely written and sung. The theme has something in common with Galvaston by Jimmy Webb. If you don't know it, you should check it out. Really beautiful job on this one!! Take care. Greg

Thanks Greg for a return to the front page I supposed like others I had been ‘winccled’ out
Aaah Jimmy Webb ( through cupped hands round the tin can I pretend to hold you to my breast and find ,,,,,) 'Gentle on my Mind' when lyrical poetry like that is woven through a song I am in heaven
I really appreciate your comments

Paddy -

I love historical songs, and the Gulag is a good subject. I still remember first reading Solzhenitsyn and that dark period left a mark.

A tasteful, thoughtful take on a difficult subject.

Bob

Hi PaddyG, This was a wonderful and soothing song. I really liked the Harp to help harmonize with the rest of the instruments. Very fitting. Well done! smile
