I'm a newbie and I have studied all the tutorials about RB but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. First, I'm using BIAB/RB 2014 with Windows 10 and a Behringer UMC204HD Audio Interface. I uploaded a song direct from my BIAB files that I created. I kept only three tracks and muted the other two. I kept Piano, Bass and Drums. On a separate track, I successfully recorded a rhythm guitar part. I've now made three attempts to record voice on another track and each time it does record, but when I play it back it is interrupted by alot of loud buzzing, slow, dragged out playing, etc. I thought I might have found the problem when I noticed that I was trying to sing while the selector switch on the audio interface was set on INST instead of LINE, but that didn't solve the problem. Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Bitrate mismatch?

Are the interface and RB set to the same bitrate? (ie 24/48 or 16/44)

It kind of sounds like the Behringer interface may be sending 24/48 data when the project is expecting 16/44 or vice versa .. buzzing and timing issues would be caused by this.

yep... set the record settings to 16/44.1 or 24/44.1 (bit depth and sample rate) .... either works and 24 is preferred for recording. Be sure everything else in the chain is also set to those numbers.

I assume that you have a condenser or dynamic mic going through the UMC204HD and that you're not using a USB mic.

Be sure you are using the ASIO drivers for the interface and that you have the latest ones from the factory website.

Did you record the rhythm guitar part through the UMC204HD inputs?

I went to the Behringer web site to look at the specs and available drivers and didn't see where they listed the specs like many other companies do. If you can't get it operational, I'd suggest a call to their tech support or ask in their forums. Others may have had similar issues.

"I play it back it is interrupted by alot of loud buzzing"

If it recorded fine with guitar but has buzzing with mic, sounds like there's a problem with the mic or connection, can you hear your vocal clearly in the headphones ?

Multiple answers here. Yes, I had both audio interface and RB set to 16/44.1. The guitar recorded fine through the audio interface but the vocal did not. My mic was not a condenser mic (don't have one yet) but I used a Shure SM58 just to get up and running. I ran it through the audio interface. Surely the SM58 wouldn't result in that type of behavior would it?

Is there any way you can post an example of the result?
That might help.

Yes, a bad connection from Mic to Interface could cause weird issues.
Maybe open some other audio recording app and verify the mic-interface-computer path is good. It's one troubleshooting step that should be easy enough.

SM-58s are pretty reliable and battle tested, more likely a bad cable distorting things.

Are you plugging the SM-58 directly into the interface or using a preamp?

The level of the signal varies a bunch depending on your signal path.
If the SM-58 is connected directly to the interface, using Line level is probably wrong, but if it goes to a preamp and THEN to the interface it is likely OK.

EDIT: you don't need 48v on unless you are using a condenser mic.

If the guitar records cleanly but the mic doesn't and you're using essentially the same input..... the problem sounds like it's in the mic or the cable to the mic.

Swap to a new or known good working cable. See what happens. Try a different mic and cable totally. Do you have a buddy who will let you borrow one for the test?

However... the part of that problem that the hardware will NOT cause is the "slow dragged out playing" part of the issue. A bad cable connection will cause the outages and buzzing and hums, but not the time shifted stuff.

That's what has me thinking this is still a software or driver issue.

Thanks to all who answered. I played with some settings and now it is working fine. Still not sure exactly what I did to solve the problem, but it's gone now. Thanks again. Now the fun begins....

Those software settings will get you every time.

Glad you figured it out, even if you're not sure exactly what you did to get it working.

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.
