Climate Change was yesterday - now it's islamism!
Islamism was yesterday - now it's financial crisis!
Financial crisis was yesterday - now it's swine flu!

A friend of mine, a virologist, keeps telling, that the danger of a pandemia is growing and growing (he wasn't referring to this actual terrible epedimia in Mexico and fortunately up to now less severe in the US) - these must be confusing times for conspiracy theorists.

The time to produce remedies industrially is about three months, the time to spread a virus world-wide is just a couple of days. Pure hysteria? Are there any arrangements in your country to prevent a spreading?

So what do you think?

[ ] React immediately, close airports, warn the population. Better a paranoid clown than a dead know-it-all.

[ ] The situation in the US shows, that the virus could be stemmed easily.

[ ] Let's wait. This is just hype.

[ ] Ignore it, the financial crisis is exciting enough.

[ ] Buy stocks of Hoffmann La-Roche. Now.

[ ] Technically we're just a regular monoculture, darwinism sucks.

I'm very scared of news like this to be honest. I have the very other opinion about the press coverage so far, I don't think at all, it's all about hype.

Opinions?

My ex-wife works at a prestigious local hospital. One of the hats she wears has to do with Infectious Disease Control (she liaises with the CDC.). According to her, the threat is real.

Her advice would be: (1) Buy the pharma stock; (2) Make sure you're on the list to get the vaccine; (3) Pray that you live.

Not necessarily in that order.

I hate to sound smug, but apparently us 'more mature' folks are (for once) at extremely low risk from this virus. Youngsters should take care though.
Seriously, the UK had its first fatality last week, but the person had complications. Those with just the flu bug and no other underlying issues always seem to recover ok.
How things will go during late autumn/winter could be a different story though...

Would you call what's going on in Iran an "I-slam-dunk" revolution?

Seriously though, I'm glad the H1N1 came along and that it wasn't too severe - since SARS hit a few years ago, the world has been in rehearsal mode - guess it's good to have a minimum scare to check out the procedures put in place. Guess you could call it a "dry" run, accept if it hits you then there is a lot of phlegm.

Here in Canuckistan they're talking about having a vaccine by Fall-Winter. Best medicine - stay out of public . . .and play that new guitar I saw a few frames back.

I think the world was lucky this time - it spread faster than I thought it would. I wonder if the spread was totally related to Mexican holidays? Or, as the conspiracists suggest, was something dastardly afoot.

Have a nice day.

(1) My ex nor Andrew's virologist friend were not referring to the swine flu. We have seen what that is about. Her and the virologist's riff is about the risk of a pandemic of an unknown disease that will be sudden, widespread, and deadly in the extreme, as was the influenza pandemic of the early 20th century. That disease appeared virtually simultaneously all over the world, despite the lack of rapid international transportation,* and killed hundreds of millions.

(2) I agree with Russ. What a great opportunity to score that new axe!

R.

*One take is that it came from space. This would explain why it occurred everywhere at once, including in isolated areas, why acquired immunity didn't seem to apply, and why Elvis is still being seen all over the Universe. Just remember--always carry a towel, and Don't Panic!

I feel the world is doing just fine when we're all more concerned by a picture of a Les Paul than by the actual issue at hand

I suppose if ever there was a place for a Robot Guitar it would be here
