I'm looking at getting my wife a Yamaha d660 kb. She like\s the way the action feels and the built in speakers. I'm looking at hooking it up to the computer and wondered about midi latency. I'm using win 10 8gig 4 core amd something like a 4950 cpu. Question might be what's the best sound card for my system to get best latency results. Any thoughts.I've got a delta 44 that's 5+ years old not installed. Thanks Wyndham

Most latency issues come from using the wrong driver.
If the sound card has drivers that work with the computer's OS, and it supports ASIO, I'd give it a try.
If it doesn't work out, get a good USB connected external interface from a company like Focusrite. I'm partial to Focusrite since I have one that works exceptionally well and has low latency. It uses ASIO.
Is the Delta 44 an internal PCI card? I think it is and it has a breakout box if I am not mistaken. So if the computer has an open PCI slot, it should work. (hopefully) I had heard that newer computers are doing away with PCI slots like they did with serial ports a few years back. Win 10 might present some issues with the drivers for the card.
The D-660 will work just fine. Midi is midi and as long as the sound card, diver, and computer are compatible with each other, you should be good.
EDIT: from the M-Audio website: No ongoing updates/support for Windows 98SE, Me or 2000
You might have problems getting this card to work. Win 10 is not listed and if they stopped supporting and updating, I'd lay money on it not working with the computer you have. You might need to get a new interface.
That happened to me. The first card I bought was a D-Man PCI that ran on a Win 95 machine. I had to do some upgrades to the OS for my biz software and the D-Man company told me "tough break"... they weren't planning to write new drivers for it. So I got out of digital recording for a time. When I came back in, I had to buy a new interface and software due to the advances in those years I was out. My DAW is custom built and when I get ready to upgrade, I'm thinking it will be a similar situation.... buy all new stuff....hardware and software. SO as long as I can keep this DAW running and repaired when it breaks down, I'll be good.

Google is your friend: http://download.yamaha.com/search/product/?language=en&site=usa.yamaha.com&category_id=16084&product_id=2144521It has USB and it's own driver plus check out the pdf for "computer related operations". You don't need an interface. Bob

So... even if the 660 has a USB connection and drivers, to connect to a computer.... and many keyboards have those these days.... it's for the purpose of getting midi to the computer. Just like serial ports on computers, 5 pin midi jacks are going away in favor of the USB connection.
The keyboard may or may not have a built in interface. Without reading the specs, I don't know. But I'd be willing to wager it probably doesn't. And not a full featured one if it does have one. HOWEVER.... even if it does, I would not use it for recording and running the software for a DAW. How would you connect external reference monitors and condenser mics for recording and monitoring other source material?
You should still look into having a dedicated and preferably external recording interface.
You can still easily get the midi into that interface through software and selecting the proper inputs to the tracks. That's what the USB is for on the keyboard. And again.... that interface should run ASIO.

A substantial amount of RAM is never a bad idea regarding many latency issues.

I'm still using the Delta44 which I bought when it first came out. I think that was that was well over 10 years ago. It replaced my Gina20...which I still have sitting neatly in a box. It sill works fine for me on Windows 7 on my newly built DAW about a month old. The 6.08 driver from there site has been the latest for along time. Latency is 5.8 ms....no problems or issues with my Pleistocene Roland JV30 keyboard controller either. Carry on....

The key here is having a computer that runs one of the older operating systems. You can't easily walk into a store and buy an old W7 machine anymore. Everything there is W10.
BUT... you can do what I and some others here have done. Build your own machine and buy a copy of one of the older OS's on the internet. You can still find XP and W7 easily. Build your own box and install your favorite OS and you'll be able to use that old card for a long time.
Depending on how tech oriented you are, you could also do a dual boot option on one of the newer boxes. Install XP or W7 as the secondary boot option. Problem solved or... perhaps a whole new set of problems.
The point is, install it on the machine you have, load the latest driver and see if it works. The worst that could happen is it doesn't work and it screws other things up so set a recovery point before proceeding and give it a try.
