The Following is my tuning and pedal/lever action.
Open tuning E9 Top to Bottom: F# D# G# E B G# F# E D B
Note G# is highest pitched string.

If you number strings from top to bottom 1 --- 10

Then you have E triads using:
10-8-6, 8-6-5, 6,5,4 and 5,4,3

Pedal A raises strings 5 and 10 to C#
Pedal B raises strings 3 and 6 to A
Pedal C raises string 4 to F# and string 5 to C#

1 Knee Lever (LKL) raises strings 4 and 8 to F
(LKR)Lever lowers srings 4 and 8 to D#
(RKR) lowers string 2 to D
(RkL) lowers string 5 to Bb

Now if you press A and B pedals you get A triads
Pedal B and LKR gives you B7

You can see the possibilities. This goes on and on.

To answer another question You can as an example
press the A pedal half way down to raise the 5th and 10th strings to just C, you then have an augmented triad.

Hope this helps a little. Any questions I'll try to answer.

Ron

Thanks Rio, This definitely gives me something to chew on. It sounds like you are moving either whole steps or half steps by using the pedals and levers. I can make the correlation to my moving my fingers on the fretboard the same way. That makes sense.

You said, this was your tuning. Even though guitars today have many alternate tunings, there is still a standard A11 tune setup. Is there a standard tuning for the steel? And then you alter to your tastes much like a guitarist would.

In your layout you mentioned E9. But, in your note list you show the 7th as both natural and sharp. Is this intentional to create a sort of major/minor 7th effect? And when you set the pedal half way, is that something you do as you set your tunings in the beginning or can you do that on the fly? I would assume on the fly because you would not use augmented chords as frequently. But, with 10 strings it opens a new realm of possibilities where you may not touch the string holding the augmented sound until you want to.

I appreciate your time. I am going to print your answer and work out the scenarios on paper. Being a very analytical musician I can work out the theories to see how the chord movements would work together based upon your schematic.

I hope you don't mind if I inquire again once I got that figured out.

The E9 tuning is one of the major 2 tunings for the pedal steel.
The other is the C6 tuning. On a double neck steel the two tunings are 99% E9 and C6. The C6 tuning has it's own pedals and knee levers.

On most pro models you can change the pedal/lever tunings.

There is another version of the pedal steel which is refered to as a universal. It has 12 strings and up to 8 pedals and 5 knee levers.
It is tuned to B6, so you can achieve the E9 and C6 moves on a single neck. I am looking at getting one of these in the future.

Yes I push a pedal half way on the fly, this also allows you to bend a note as well as getting an aug chord.

With having both 7ths (Natural and #) you can play strings 9 instead of 10 along with say 6 and 5 and with the bass playing the 1 note get a dom7 chord. strings 8,6,5,2 gives you Maj7 chord. By engaging the RKL level you get dom7.
Here is link to other tunings
