I wrote this song for a granddaughter just turning two, but I also wanted to improve my knowledge of BIAB. I studied David Snyder's Drobbox pdf about using periods after chords, and then studied a bit about changing bar settings, and I also used the idea from the forum (Tobias and jford, but they use an oboe and an oboe isn't low enough for me) of not just singing to the BIAB music, but to sing to the melody played along from a Casio CTK-2400 keyboard piano sound (not on a track, just live playing it) to avoid being flat as much as I could. I compressed the vocal, and I hope on my next song to be better about it and maybe do some EQ.

The style is Trinkets, starting with the demo song but changing some by using Ballin The Jack and When I'm 64 and then some other I forget what. It's kind of a novelty tune, or maybe upgrade that to a cabaret song.

Two Years Old

Have you heard a whistling bird?
Have you seen the grass so green?
Have you felt a furry pelt?
That’s not much of a shock.

Did you smell trees of Noel?
Did you taste tomato paste?
Been around the block.

These are the senses, one to five,
They help you live and jive,
It’s on the board in chalk.

Now one more, it’s your sixth,
It’s why you’re not inbetwixt,
Helps you round the clock.

You’ll tweet Twitter, that’s for sure,
Read postmodern litterature,
Or maybe you’ll be a jock.

Watching movies fashionably dress,
Play a game of tournament chess,
Listen to Mozart or Bach.

Play piano in a jazzy set,
Make a fancy vinaigrette,
Analyze John Locke.

In New Jersey on the East Coast,
Minnesota family you can boast,
Came from Brooklyn, just a bambino,
Your new home is Cupertino!
This is where…you’ll… rock!

Marty,

A very clever, very INTELLIGENT write.

There is SO much in that...

A good presentation. I would add a little more reverb to your vocal - that will help it "sit in the mix" some.

I enjoyed this.

Very creative, Marty. I like your choice of instruments. You've shown us all that with BIAB it doesn't pay to let yourself be confined to the Realtrack descriptions.. country, dixieland and jazz work really well together here.

Like everything, BIAB and mixing are about practice. My experience has been that each song becomes a stepping stone to making the next song just that little bit better.

I enjoyed this. I'm pretty sure your granddaughter will love it, too!

All the best,
Noel

Cool song. Appropriate for the 2 yr old. I'll bet she likes it.

Some observations.... I like the tracks you used. The piano track sounded good.

One thing got my immediate attention.... where you hit the first word "shock" there was a brief pause of dead silence. That was a bit of a shock to me. What you want to do there is provide some level of continuity. It's fine to stop in the song, but.... have a reverb in the production line so that while the music stops, the natural decay continues. While barely perceptible, it's what we're expecting to hear. If you hear a live band and they do a "cymbal grab stop", there's natural room reverb that carries you through the stop. You should try to emulate that as well. A very short and low level small room reverb will work nicely and not be overly apparent in short stops like that.

I forget which song of mine it is now, but I do have one stop in it with a reverb carry though. The stop is effective with out sounding to abrupt and final with dead silence in it.

That's my opinion and I'm sticking to it. cool

Very cool lyrics. This will be a treasure for your granddaughter for a long time for sure. A beautiful gift. As Floyd said the lyrics were very clever. Well done. You did a great job on the vocal as well...

Marty,
This is more than good fun - its extremely well written with such a nice balance of wry humour and keen observation.Like Raffi (kids songwriter) but less cutesy.
A perfect style choice for the lyric too.
Sure the production is a learning curve but that`s just a little shine you`ll find your way to add to gems like this.
Enjoyable listens!

Robert
