'I lost my way'
Story behind the song.

I read with interest posts from 'Guitar Hacker' and several others on songwriting and I am in awe at the proffesional talent on this forum.
I am still learning the craft but this song came to me when I learned 2 new chords. Gsus7 and Fsus7. (I hasten to add that they didn't sound too good in BIAB so I have just made them G and F I later transposed the song to E, but wished I hadn't for the vocals!!) Anyway, these two chords became the intro and start to a new song.
I just now needed an idea for lyrics.
I opened a book and scanned the page, I came across the word 'LOST' I then looked up all the different meanings of the word and eventually peiced together my new song which is now ready for your listening ears and any comments where I can improve on mixing etc are welcomed.

I Lost My Way
I CANNOT FEEL IT SEEMS SO SURREAL WHATS ENCLOSING ME
LIKE A CHILD ALL ALONE WITH NO HAND TO HOLD WHO IS LEADING ME
I DON’T KNOW WHICH WAY TO GO AND I DON’T LIKE IT ON MY OWN
WILL SOMEONE FIND ME I DON’T KNOW

BEWILDERED AND BLIND PERPLEXES MY MIND ITS CONFUSUSING ME
SURROUNDED BY DOUBT IS THERE ANY WAY OUT WHATS MY DESTINY
I NEED SOMEONE TO SHOW THE WAY AND TURN MY DARKNESS INTO DAY
WILL SOMEONE TRY TO FIND ME I DON’T KNOW
I LOST MY WAY SOMETIME AGO I LOST MY WAY...

NO DIRECTION NO AIM AM I LOSING THE GAME
AINT NO LIGHT AINT NO SIGNS THAT I CAN SEE
I DONT HAVE CONTROL AND SO ROUND AND ROUND I GO
CAN SOMEONE HELP TO SET ME FREE
WILL SOMEONE TRY TO FIND ME
I DON’T KNOW I LOST MY WAY SOMETIME AGO
I LOST MY WAY

THEY WONT LET YOU WIN THE CIRCLES I’M IN I DON’T GET TO CHOOSE
CONTINUALLY LED ITS EASILY SAID I WILL ALWAYS LOSE
WITHIN THE CONFINES OF MY SOUL I NEED TO FIND ANOTHER ROAD
WILL SOMEONE TRY TO FIND ME I DON’T KNOW
I LOST MY WAY SOMETIME AGO, I LOST MY WAY SOMETIME AGO, I LOST MY WAY SOMETIME AGO

I like everything about this song! I think your lyrics and storyline are very strong. But what I found particularly pleasing is the production quality of your mix and arrangement. It's different in a way that to me, works really well with the lyrics.

I'm on my third straight listen as I write these comments... Different elements keep grabbing my attention. Everything seems to add to the aura of the song.

This is one of those songs I wish I'd written. Having fun listening and enjoying this song. Good job. Already looking forward to what's next from you.

Yorkshireknight,

I agree with Charlie... this is really well done. A very good pop write and nicely produced. The addition of the horns and organ work well.

This has the sound (and feel) of classic AM pop radio - late 60's maybe - cannot think of band names off the top of my head - but this would fit that perfectly. (Royal Guardsmen? Dave Clark Five?)

Excellent listen...

Well written with vocal and backing tracks that well support the lyric.

The production sounds very nice on our monitors.

Kudos!

Floyd got it!! Really has that 60's vibe-the song and production. At first the voice sounded a bit distant and wet but it grew on me and does fit the vibe. Very well done!! Take care. Greg

Very good song.

Yup, there's so many good things in this. I agree with Floyd. It has that late 60's pop feel. I get traces of the Turtles and The Zombies in there.

Nicely done.

Mix crits: the overall level is low and the vocals are a few dB too loud, however, the mix is still a good clean mix which is more than half the game. Just a few tweeks here and there.

Yorkshireknight, I have listened to many songs on this forum but I've got to say that this one is one of my favorites! I truly enjoyed it. You have a great voice and you did a great job putting this together. I thought the vocal harmony around the 2 minute mark really added to the song along with those horns a little later. Keep on rockin' Thanks, Torrey.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. The vocals and harmonies are really well done, the breaks located perfectly, the melody has great interest, an the overall framing of the song sits just perfectly.

I would like to thank everyone for your wonderful comments and thought it only fitting to reply to everyone personally as I see many of you already adopt this approach.
Being only my second song with BIAB/RB, it has received equally flattering and constructive comments and I find it both humbling and inspiring that these comments come from excellent singer songwriters and musicians. Thank you all.

Thank you Floyd, 'I'm feeling glad all over' (Dave Clark Five) you think it has something of the 60's feel, it just shows my age. I'm pleased you liked the other 'bits and peices'. The brass and the organ. I wanted a rock organ sound originally but for some reason it wouldnt play a certain part of the midi??, so I ended up with the softer organ sound. Another story behind the song! Thanks again for your kind comments. Paul

Thank you Janice and Bud. I only own a couple of old hi fi speakers ( which I found in a bin/trashcan some years ago) and so to hear that the final production sounds Ok is great news to me. Keep up the good work you guys are doing too. Paul

Many Thanks Guitar Hacker for your invaluable comment. again I am in pretty good company especially with the 'Zombies' Thank you also for the comments on the mix, I am more than happy you have found it clean and other stuff I can still improve on. Appreciate your time GH. all the best, Paul.

Bless you Torrey for your kind comments. I must admit I now have to be careful with the songs I write, my ole voice cant get the highs anymore. I wonder if we can invent Singer in a Box? Really pleased you liked my second efort with RB/BIAB. Onwards and Upwards! Paul

You study well grasshopper.

smile

Love the harmonic texture in this song. The chords and instrumentation and arrangement you chose on this one really complement and "cradle" the sounds you are producing in the vocals, which are a combination of the actual words you chose (great by the way) and the excellent singing and articulation.

On top of that the mix is totally pro.

I really liked this quite a bit.

More of these please.

Thank you very much Shigeki. Yet again the 60's era has been brought up. When I was a young lad in the sixties I listened and sang all the songs of the day, it has subconciously influenced my taste in music.
There were some great music at that time and British pop and Rock was very strong and many Brit groups 'invaded the states' Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment. All the best.Paul

Hi.

An excellent song in every way.

A great backing and I particularly liked your vocal and the super harmony. Your voice has a distinctive sound in the manner of Colin Blunstone and it suits the song perfectly.

You may be new to the forum, but it does sound to me as though you've been at the music game for longer than that - there are some very profession touches in this production.

I've just got to ask - do you have a connection with Yorkshire? (You can see where I'm based!)

Cheers, ROG.

Thanks Rog for the huge compliment. Guitar hacker had made comment to the Zombies sound, maybe it was a reference to Colin Blunstone vocals?

As for my musical history. .............

Only about 15 years ago I answered an advertisement for a group looking for a lead singer to peform covers of 60;s numbers( The 60's is cropping up again!)and do private gigs in the Cheshire,Lncashire & Merseyside areas. I was in my mid 40's,( knocking on a bit to start a career LOL )

The other guys were good musicains and had been gigging during the sixties, in fact our bass player(Terry Benson) had been a member of 'The Lancastrians' who had a hit in 1963 with a song called 'We'll sing in the sunshine' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lancastrians

WE were together for about 5 years until I took early retirement and moved out here to Bulgaria, 'the boys' still practice together most Fridays and still gig occasionally.

Since I enjoyed music and was now retired, I started to write some songs of my own, but my lack of playing ability on any instrument is a handicap.
I do know a few chords on guitar, I can play a keyboard 'by ear' using one hand and know a little about music theory.

Since living in Bulgaria, my friend and lead guitar player of our 60's cover group produced and played in 2 songs that I had written and another freind helped with bass and drums on another song.

Unfortuantley these guys are busy doing other things and so my song writing had come to a virtual halt until,.......... I found BIAB! I may not get exactly what I want for my songs but it allows me to share my music to some degree of acceptable quality without spending zillions on expensive programmes.

The production side of things, mixing mastering is a complete new world to me but the internet is a marvellous place to learnwhere I learn albeit. slowly, slowly.

Congratulations to you too on giving free lessons to guys like me who may aspire to being able to play a barre chord.

..............and to finally answer your wonderful comments Rog, Yes I do hail from Gods own county of Yorkshire. From the Leeds area. In fact we shall be visiting there soon at a family wedding at Follifoot.
All the Best
