Well, I finally got the 12 year old Roland Guitar Synth (GR-20) which is built into my Fender Strat set up and linked it up to BIAB via midi into the computer midi/audio interface. The sound goes through the mixer and into the midi/audio interface on the computer as well. All still working fine, although the 3 way switch on the Fender Strat that allows you to switch between synth, guitar or play both sounds together, now sometimes bleeds the guitar sound into the synth only setting. Luckily, it seemed to be getting better the more I played. Certainly, my playing must have improved as the synth sounds (which are very good) seemed to sound more authentic than I remembered. No tracking issues either. Anyway, BIAB questions. The first time I recorded midi it worked but there was no playback of BIAB as I recorded. It played back the (Albiet random) midi ok though so BIAB was recording midi fine. After the first time I could hear BIAB simultaneously, so I guess it was nothing important. Probably just a gremlin. What is consistent is that the guitar synth appears to be out of tune with BIAB. I find it hard to believe that Roland doesn't follow 440 standard. Is BIAB set differently? Any suggestions? Has anyone else had this issue with external synths? Early days, so no doubt there will be a few other questions. On the whole I'm very pleased as it sounded great with BIAB - a very big sound without any guitar or guitar effects yet. (The Roland guitar synth can play guitar at the same time or via a normal guitar jack - it has a special connection for the midi.)

Lambada, try turning the Strat's volume completely off when using MIDI only as that may stop the bleed.
I have an old Casio Strat/MIDI controller much like yours, i.e. guitar, both, or synth. I believe that I can set the tuning to other than 440 if I wanted, but I have never done so. Also virtually every hard and soft synth has a tuning adjust so I can set them to something other than 440. Check to make sure that the sound source and your guitar controller are set to 440.
Note - I have never had a problem moving MIDI and audio files from BiaB to my DAW so tells me that BiaB's GM sound source and RTs are set to 440.
When you are at the checkout line and they ask if you found everything say "Why, are you hiding stuff?"

Can't remember if the GR20 has a tuning function, but am certain the default is 440. Might try a system reset, which is what I do with any used gear that I buy. There is a neat manual on using the GR20 with a DAW, which isn't exactly what BiaB is, but is still helpful in understanding how to get the GR20 to work. http://cms.rolandus.com/assets/media/pdf/GR20WS03.pdfHope this helps. The GR20 is a neat interface, I have one, but not in heavy rotation. Have been playing MIDI guitar for 25 years or so (starting with the Casio strat that Mario has) and they are a lot of fun.

Thanks DC and Mario. The GR20 does have tuning built in, so I'll check it and do a reset. Just got to track down the manual which is no doubt downloadable on line. Also, I have some neat custom patches set up from 10 years ago, which I'd rather keep. Mario, I did just what you said and the bleed disappeared. I'm hoping the switch will sort itself out with a bit of use nonetheless. I'll also have a read of the DAW GR20 info. All good. A bit like Xmas. :-) It really was / is a fine piece of technology.

Glad you posted your original message. Time for me to dust off (literally) my GR-30 and try this. Thanks.
