Return to the forum after over a year...please can any of the experts advise whether I can use BIAB 2009 on my Vista laptop which has a RealTek HD multimedia soundcard(non-MIDI).
I've been using BIAB quite happily since 2002 using my audio desktop PC and an Audigy SB2 card, with the new version I would like to load this onto my laptop, just so I can use the RealTracks.
Many Thanks

I have returned to BIAB and the forum as well. My last version was BIAB 11, long before Real Tracks.
I have BIAB 2009 and Real Tracks on my Gateway desktop, Vista 64 SP2. It has the Realtek High Definition Audio, the one built in to the motherboard. It works fine.

Neil, it should be fine.
Be aware that the complete set of Real Tracks will take up a serious amount of hard drive space. One solution to that is to run the program, including Real Drums and Real Tracks, from the USB hard drive that PG Music markets. Or, install the program on your laptop drive but point the Real Tracks and Real Drums to the USB drive.
FYI, BIAB works fine on Windows 7 RC also.

Neil, The only thing that I would say is that you might have an issue with the quality of the sound from the built in RealTek. It'll work, but you may be missing out on some of the sounds that Real Tracks has to offer.
But, a warning. Vista and Window 7 have seriously messed with the USB Audio capabilities. They will sample rate convert all of your files without your permission, or possibly even your knowledge. This only applies to USB.
If you have a CardBus slot in your new computer, several manufacturers, including Creative (which I don't recommend to anyone anymore) have CardBus audio interfaces which will give you Prosumer level audio in and out, and may give you a better sound in the long run over the built in chip.
My two cents.
Gary

Gary, can you recommend a reference where I could read more about the Vista/7 USB audio sample rate conversion problem?

Not really, Matt, since Microsoft doesn't consider it a 'problem' but a 'feature.'
When you use an USB device, and you click on Playback Devices, Properties and the Advanced Tab, it will show you the available sample rates and bit depths. All the bit depths are 24 bit, so if you're playing a CD, then it adds 8 bits worth of data to everything. If not done correctly, it adds noise.
Secondly, if you choose 96kHz, 24 bit, which is the default I think, it will upsample everything. Again, that presents the possibility of adding noise. Why would you want to change a 16 bit, 44.1kHz CD to 24 bit, 96kHz, if you aren't getting anything added to it?
AND, if you have recorded something at 24/48, and you have left the output at 24/96, that's what you're getting. Even if you're using something like Sonar, it's going to override the settings of the program.
Finally, there have been some posts on the internet that says it is possible to take the USBaudio.sys file from XP, and use it in Vista/Win 7, but requires a bit of finagling to get it done.

m$ never have bugs - only features. For example, one of my hard drives (the ONLY hard drive in that laptop and it was running XP Pro) decided to wipe itself immediately prior to a gig. When I contacted m$ they told me it was a 'security feature'. Go figure!
