Hi everyone, My new video is up on YouTube. It's a sound comparison between a Fender Stratocaster, a Fender Telecaster and a Gibson Les Paul. Strat vs Tele vs Les Paul Its no talking, just sound. Hope you like it. P.S.: I still need subscribers. I get a distinct Youtube URL when I reach 100 subs. Enjoy, Sandra

Thanks Sandra! You are a sweet guitar player!
I own an old Les Paul and a fairly new American Strat. Maybe I am just not musically sophisticated enough but I feel, using pedals and fx, I can get pretty much any sound I want out of either the LP or the Strat. I usually just choose based on which one is more comfortable to play for a certain song.
I wonder what your thoughts are on this? All my life I have known guitarists who swear by a certain electric guitar but I think it was David Gilmour who said he could pop into the local music store, grab any guitar and amp along with a few pedals, and play live...and sound just like David Gilmour!

Sandra, that was a very nice comparison. I also listened to your hollow body vs semi hollow body comparison. Again it was excellent.
If I may ask a few questions. Did you use identical strings on the Strat, Tele and LP guitars? Did you use the same strings on the jazz guitar comparisons? Just curious. Also do you use flat wounds on your jazz guitars? I love the sound of flat wounds on my jazz box.
You started a super version of Moonlight in Vermont. It sounded a lot like Johnny Smith. I would like to hear the whole song from you.
Ps - I signed up.

Well, you can try to model any guitar to sound as if it were another type. In my opinion it's not the same. You just don't get that punch from a Les Paul, that you get from a Tele or a Strat. It's just not as aggressive, no matter how hard you compress it. I use a Strymon Riverside overdrive pedal when teaching, which has a versatile three band EQ section. When I'm too lazy to change the Strat for the Paula, I try to adjust the Overdrive pedal to have a fatter sound. And I'm never satisfied, because it's just by no means as fat and warm sounding as the Paula. So, sure you can EQ and FX a guitar sound, but in my opinion it makes no sense, since the results are not satisfying anyway. But I absolutely agree, that the sound of a guitarist is in their fingers and playing style. David Gilmour well always sound like David Gilmour, no matter what type of guitar he uses. Sandra

Ps - I signed up. Hi Mario, Thanks for subbing my channel and the very kind feedback. As for the strings: The Strat and Les Paul both have D'Addario 10s on, while I use Mangan 10s on the Tele. On my jazz guitars I use Thomastik Infeld strings. Those are excellent Austrian strings (George Benson and many other great jazz guitarists play them) and thus easily available here in Austria. On the semi acoustic (Gibson Howard Roberts Fusion) I use Thomastik Bebop 12s, which are round wound. For the hollow body (Eastman 905) I use Thomastik Swing 12s, which are flat wounds. Personally I'm not a fan of flat wound guitar strings, since they provide not enough sustain for my taste. In order to have different sounds with my two jazz guitars, I opted for flat wounds on the hollow body. Thank you for the compliment on my chord melody version of "Moonlight In Vermont". I will put it on my list for the video shootings in summer. Sandra

Nice job on this Sandra, I gave it a "like". I'm subscribed to your channel but didn't get notification that you had uploaded a new video, not sure why. Couldn't agree more with your comment "Well, you can try to model any guitar to sound as if it were another type. In my opinion it's not the same." Especially true when played clean or with little distortion, once you start adding lots of distortion the lines start to blur a little. But even still, the guitar and especially the pickups make a big difference to the overall tone. That's how I justify to my wife that I need more than one guitar anyway, it's worked so far!

I just subscribed. By the way, the reason I bought my latest electric guitar and did a wiring modification to it, was to try to get all those types of different tones from one guitar. Yes, I know, it's not quite possible, but I've gotten very close. The guitar is an Epiphone Nighthawk Custom Reissue and the pickup configuration stock is Neck PAF style humbucker, middle single coil that's pretty hot, and a slanted tail humbucker. Both of the humbuckers can be tapped for single coil configuration, and there's a strat-style 5-position switch. Controls are a master volume and master tone. I have done a 'tail pickup on' switch that also gives me several more combinations than the stock configuration. In total, there are 13 different pickup combinations, and I can get a Tele-like both pickups sound, dual HB sound; (not quite LP, but almost), very strat-like single coil position 2 and 4 sounds, etc. It's a REALLY versatile guitar. When it was a Gibson model, the design was guided by Nancy Wilson from Heart. I was lucky enough to get the Epiphone re-issue 4 or 5 years ago. I have an mp3 file demonstrating all of the different combinations that I can send to you if that is interesting to you.

Hi Scott, That sounds interesting. Coil splitting definitely makes a Les Paul type guitar more versatile. Please share your audio file, so we can hear, how close you managed to get to a Strat or Tele kind of sound with that Nighthawk.
Thanks for subbing, Sandra
