I am unsure how to get BIAB2014 to notate in 7/8. Should I use 7/4 and adjust the tempo? Or, what?

If this is answered somewhere on the PG support page, please just provide a link. I couldn't find anything useful when I searched and may have overlooked it.

Thanks for your help.

I don't recall a specific discussion on this, only requests to support this and other time signatures. Even 7/4 cannot be 'notated' in BIAB. It must be constructed from some combination of supported meters, such as a bar of 4/4 followed by a bar of 3/4, then repeat.

Or maybe I'm not understanding your question.

Jazzwombat,

It would be worth investigating Realband in relation to this. I'm not sure about notation but Realband does let users work with the less common time signatures more efficiently than BIAB. As you can see on the below image, I've set it to 7/8 and each bar has 7 counts in it.

Just a thought.

Regards,
Noel

Hi Matt: You understood my question. I feared there wasn't a direct way to 7/8, but I had to ask before using the 4/4 + 3/4 solution.

And you used the word notated, so while you might get the 7/8 to sound right, you won't have very readable notation (at least not for someone expecting it to be 7/8 time).

I would use a dedicated notation program to accomplish that. In Noteworthy Composer, I would import the MIDI from BIAB, then highlight everything and reduce the duration from quarter notes to eighth notes (well everything gets reduced in half, so eighth goes to sixteenth, etc), set the time signature to 7/8, then remove the extraneous 4/4 and 3/4 symbols and the extraneous bar lines. Noteworthy isn't so strict on notes per measure (meaning you'll need to fix it yourself, but there are tools to do so), so you can easily display extra notes and bar lines without worry until you audit everything and clean it up. But that's a pretty quick way to get 7/8 notation from something that doesn't look anything like 7/8 notation.

Yes, exactly. I put 'notated' in quotes because I wasn't sure we were talking about notation as much as just constructing a BIAB song in 7/8 (using a workaround for 7/4).

BiaB is an excellent auto-accompaniment app, that happens to have a basic reference notation feature.

BiaB notation comes in handy, but it isn't meant to be a full fledged notation app, more of a convenient tool.

For making real notation charts, as John mentioned, you need a dedicated notation app.

For me, I think most computer musicians need:
  1. MIDI sequencer
  2. DAW
  3. Band-in-a-Box
  4. A notation app

Thanks everyone. In the end, I did the work in Musescore. It was just easier.
