I have noticed RD tracks showing red on the track and the master meter, but I think the issue is related to a RT preference setting. The setting is "Reduce volume of RealTracks to Match MIDI." I assumed if only using RTs/RDs (w/no MIDI) for exporting to a DAW for mixing that is was fine to uncheck this, but doing so seems to cause the RealDrums to show clipping on the track and on the Master meter. Both show red on the kick and snare, but the track does not sound distored. I assumed that unchecking this setting would render RT/RD tracks at the original recorded volume, but not clipped.

When I render a WAV and import to a DAW, it shows the track clipping as well, just as if the track was recorded too hot, and needs to have the gain trimmed. Anyone have any thoughts on what might be going on here?

Leaving the setting checked keeps the meters out of the red. I'm on build 465 but have noticed this issue for the last few builds at least.

What Realdrums are you using? If you post the name, users in the forum can test them.

Noel,

I got the same result with a few different RealDrums. One example would be NashvilleEven8. I normally use the "Set mix to flat, dry, and center" setting since I am mixing in a DAW. This puts all faders at 90. I can obviously pull this down before rendering, but I'm just curious if I should have to and if other folks notice the same thing.

Thanks for taking a look.

jdchess,

I use the Nashville ev8 RealDrums with no panning, reverb and 90 volume setting a great deal of the time and have not experienced distortion or volume too loud issues.

I'm sorry you're experiencing the issue.

Wild guess: Options, Preferences, RealDrums has a Global Volume Adjust. Is this zero? If so, try a negative number.

You should also update to Build 466.

I've never tried any Nashville-related instruments, but I can tell you that in the jazz and Latin genre, I normally have to take the RealDrums down to around 70 to 75 to match up with the piano and bass at 90.

The "Set mix to flat, dry, and center" setting is a timesaving shortcut to quickly remove the volume, panning and effects of the selected style for exported tracks intended for mixing and editing in a DAW so you don't have to manually adjust each individual track. You will almost always need to tweak the volume levels of some tracks to accommodate variations in the recording levels. There are over 2,000 + hours of recorded audio that have been recorded at different times, in different places by different artists on different instruments. Even if you are doing a solo project where you are playing all the instruments and doing midi, you are recording different instruments and different times and will have to balance the levels.

Regardless where the recorded audio track originates, in a DAW studio project or hardware project, the first 'mixing' step should be gain staging the tracks to ensure headroom and avoid clipping as you mix, pan and add effects. Adding effects normally result in adding gain.

Gain staging is a normal recording process.

Charlie

Well, me thinks something has changed because nearly all my tracks apart from Jazz styles are now going into the red. I used to put the drums at 90 and work down from that. I'm sure they weren't going into the red before. Now I have the drums at about 70. One good thing is that you can use the Shift Key to move all the levels together relative to each other.

It might be that you had adjusted the setting I referred to, then did a Return to Factory Settings which restored it to the default (higher) volume?
