Already got my account. I applied early and got the "tester" account. I haven't bought anything yet, but only because I don't need anything right now. No tax and free shipping over $49 sounds good.

Saw this a few days ago and wanted to post a link to +++ Shop My Exchange dot Com +++ but couldn't think of a good subject line.

One article I read states veterans will be able to shop online or at base exchanges but the exchange link just mentions online. I haven't found the original Department Of Defense (DOD) news release yet so I don't know if on base shopping will be allowed. I'm sure I'll know before the program starts November 11. Also, it doesn't make much difference to me since the nearest base is almost 100 miles.

The CEO of the DOD's exchange program is a veteran and formerly was in charge at Macy's. The military is shrinking in size so much he was able to convince the DOD to increase the potential customer pool by adding veterans. I hope honorably discharged veterans will support the policy change.

I read about this on Friday and tried to sign up but they couldn't find me. I think I'll need to input some info from my DD14 or something.

Ha...what a surprise!
Already manifestations of governmental inefficiency.
But, I'd guess you're right about getting out the DD214 for personal verification.

I haven't tried it yet because I order very little on line.
Sheetmusicplus.com is about the only online purchasing I've done for the last couple years.

I hope it's not just hype and BS because competing with Amazon won't be an easy task and if there is no real noticeable savings then what's the point.
It's a wait and see for me.

A good day to all.....

I registered; they found me, but needed my DD-214 to verify the information. I'm supposed to hear back in a few days.

1. ALL WHO SERVED, and have a DD-214, with Honorable on it, you SHOULD go ahead and get signed up "just because." It may come in even more handy someday fro future & additional TBD uses/accesses and it costs you nothing except your time right now.

I won’t go into whether it saves you a lot money or none at all, that’s for another much LONGER thread.

FYI this does not affect me, I’m retied USAF (’90) and have a retied ID card. Translation: I can come and go as I please on bases, Exchanges, and other base facilities (Personnel, Finance, Pass & ID, Legal Office, commissary, gas stations, etc.). Admittedly, since 9/11 I can no longer just "walk into" the Five-Sided Puzzle Palace (aka Pentagon) like I use to, and a few similar high profile/high security places/bases without: official business, an escort, and a visit request on-file. But as gov't contractor since retirement (now retired on-call consultant) I've have and had many such official business trips and visit requests on-file at most such locations.

2. Additionally, ALL WHO SERVED should ALSO go to your LOCAL VA facility, with DD-214 in-hand, and get a VA ID CARD - EVEN IF YOU DO NOT USE, or NEED, VA care!

That ID card alone (can) get you other benefits. Check with your local VA about what the VA ID card may be able to do for you. Just one example: in New Mexico a VA ID CARD will get you FREE annual Rail Runner passage, that alone would cost anywhere from a couple hundred to over a $1000 a year to obtain.

FYI: the "Rail Runner" is a NM Roundhouse (aka state assembly) boondoggle. It was and is an ill conceived idiotic "mass transit" Express Train from Belen to Sante Fe, duh! It will never be financially viable on it's own, and the legislature KNEW that when they went ahead anyway it will, for all time, be a drain on NM taxpayers to run and maintain.

I love it here in the SW desert, for many reasons, but NM is really just a third-world county and the politics is truly reminiscent of a banana republic (sans late night "executions," at least to date).

Larry

Maybe my favorite place in the US of A. I would like to find a little corner of Alamogordo to buy a 1/10 acre plot, pour a 50 foot slab on it and live there in my RV for a month or so when I get tired of the road. Beautiful scenery, and with the varied elevations, every temperature range you want.

What arrangement Don? There are multiple subjects mentioned in this thread so I'm not sure what you mean.

Only two topics besides my off topic diatribe on NM politics, and I'm sorry about that:

PRIMARY topic: now all honorably discharged vets can get access to Militray Exchanges (sans firearms and tobacco), and I added a secondary.

Secondary topic: (most - not sure if it only applies to Honorable) DD-214 holders should go get a VA ID Card - it also might be useful for different things, beyond VA MEDICAL care.

Don should speak for himself but I suspect his question: ”Does Amazon honor this arrangement?” refers to the former, not the later.

My answer: I suspect NO but I do NOT know, so simple way to know is to ASK AMAZON directly!

"Adding 13 million potential new customers will give extra ammunition to the group that runs the stores on U.S. Army and Air Force bases worldwide as it fights Amazon and other retailers for veterans’ online shopping dollars." http://www.militarytimes.com/2017/07/21/honorably-discharged-veterans-will-soon-get-to-shop-tax-free/

AAFES is going to be in competition with Amazon. They don't need any permission from Amazon.

Already understood that so OK point made and underlined but what I meant/alluded to was: "honor" = "PRICE matching" and is also what I ASSUMED (but we know what "assume" does) was the underlying question by Don.

Re: PRICE matching. AFFES already does price matching, usually (and I'll leave it at that).
