I was working with a client in the studio last night and we were laying down some ruff vocals on his BB tracks for the project.

We had a punch in to do at the end of the song and so I set the parameters for the song to start playing a few bars before the punch and set the punch from bar 117-125 and we tried at least 6 times and it never worked once.

All we got was dead air like nothing was recorded.

I have used the punch in feature on previous versions of BB without too much issue but never had it NOT record anything.

I do find the parameters you need to enter for the punch a little confusing to use...

I have tried to add a picture of the control panel but can't seem to do it so I will explain how it was setup.

I had the Record From set to - Bar 111-1-1 That was never an issue it always started from the right place.

I had punch in record checked with the following parameters...

From - 117-1-1 Thru - 125-1-1.

I B1 pressed record and off it went...

But nothing was ever recorded, so I just want to know if I was doing something wrong or is Punch in broken in BB?

Thanks

Tony

Hi Tony,

I tested punch in just like you described and it is working in my testing in Band-in-a-Box 2018. If there's an instance where it doesn't work we would need to try to track that down. Check that the VU meters are showing activity while you are recording, make sure to keep the take as a punch in, and check the Audio Edit window afterwards for the entire song to see if there is a waveform there where you expect.

Tony,

Did you check that your audio was set for recording in the Windows setting?

With my soundcard, I need to activate the input 'Mic' and have the volume up for recording to happen.

Regards,
Noel

Sorry guys but all these things you mentioned are not an issue as I can see. We were in the middle of recording so there were no software or hardware changes.

VU meters were working etc...everything seemed to be as it should.

When we did the punch in I did check the audio file and it was blank...so I don't know if I did something wrong in the way I set the parameters or what.

I did grab another version of the track and had him record the same section as a punch in and it worked with no issue. I then just copied that take to the original version of the song and pasted it where it needed to go...voila a work around.

I will try the punch in again over the weekend and see how it goes and post back here with my findings.

BTW Andrew if you guys would like some independant or user testing done for BB or RB please let me know as that is what I do for a living at Nav Canada....I test air traffic control software...Just thought I'd throw it out there for you guys.
