Hi again,
I am checking out the new WAS driver.
I had been using ASIO for my AudioBox USB 96 interface. It was giving me trouble in some songs with Real Tracks. I'd get occasional audio breakup, even at buffer size 256.
To my surprise, the WAS driver works with the Audiobox.
But, I can't get it to go lower than 34 ms latency, which seems too slow. If I change it in the driver dialog, it changes back to 34.
I don't have a clue what I am doing. The drivers mystify me.
steve

Without knowing how fast your computer is, primarily the CPU, it's hard to know if this performance is acceptable. Then we would need to know more about the Audiobox, though if it's capable of 96, it's probably quite fast. Even so, you should get better performance by changing that to a slower sampling rate, even 44.1

Thanks. The audiobox is running at 44.1
Lenovo T440s.
Intel i5-4300U 1.9GHz M5/S1/F6 x4
I am running in "high performance" mode which keeps the CPU at 1.9
Why does the WAS driver dialog peg my latency at 34?

Ok, since the tech specs look fine, I suggest going back to look at the problem statement. You said SOME songs give you trouble. In Preferences, RealTracks there is s checkbox that says This song has playback problems (some wording like that). Try that. There are other settings, such as Turn Off Fast Generation. I have an i7 but I also use some of these settings to be sure I get no problems.
You might want to switch back to ASIO first then try these.

thanks.
my main question is: why won't the driver config form let me change the latency to anything lower than 35?
in the WAS driver window, in the bottom left, there is a place to change the latency.
It says "35". If i reduce it to 20, and hit OK, this has no effect. The audio info still says 35, and if i come back to the driver window, is has reset to 35.
how come?
thanks, steve

How come? I do not know.
I had trouble on my system with the WAS driver. ASIO works great and I just use that.
If I had to guess, I would guess that there is an internal routine in the WAS drivers that checks the system to see how low it can go, and won't let you set it below that. But it's just conjecture based on the similar way BIAB can tell you a recommended latency setting after querying the sound card.
Anyone who knows WAS drivers, can you answer his question?
And my question is, if you can get the ASIO driver to work well with the techniques I gave you, why would it matter how the WAS driver performs?

The WAS communicates with the sound card drive. The sound card drive is a lower level communicates / get process signal with the hardware. Therefore the latency will be depend on your hardware and the sound card drive performance / process.
Also depend on your PC system hardware: hard disk performance and RAM

For low latency the only way is to use ASIO drivers from the manufacturer of your audio interface. This is the only way that the digital audio stream can bypass the OS and hence any system latency. WASAPI drivers are better than the old MME ones but are still Windows dependant.
