I attemoted to substitute a real track with a midi synth patch. I tried both the piano and guitar tracks. It would not work. I just picked a style so I could here the patch . Can you only sub midi for midi?

Yes... if you want to hear a midi synth patch, it's necessary to have midi data on the track. Since Realtracks are audio, they are not capable of sending any midi information to drive a synth.

The exception would be in Realband where it's possible to load a RT's notation onto a separate track (if the RT has notation associated with it). Since this notation is midi-based, it could be used to control a midi synth on this track that contains notation.

Rich,

There's nothing to feel stupid about. It's all just part of the learning curve and this midi versus audio question is one the comes up a number of times a year in one form or another.

Noel

Hi Rich59,

There is one way to replace a RealTrack with a MIDI track, though it won't be playing the same notes as the RealTrack. This might be handy if you've already chosen a RealStyle but want one MIDI instrument whose notes can be edited.

You can right-click on the track name at the top of the BIAB window, and choose "Select Custom MIDI Style for this track". This will allow you to bring a MIDI track from another style into the song you're working on.

Thanks
Kent

Hi Kent, I wanted to share what happened to me today, not quite what your talking about here. I was working on a song with all real tracks. I wanted to force the real drums track to midi drums. So I right clicked on the drum track and selected force drum track to midi drums. The drum track turned yellow and said standard drum kit. Alright I said to myself. When I played the song the program gave me the 4 click intro but then that was it, NO drums. The rest is a long story but it involved me calling tech support. I did and the nice lady gave me her interpration of what she thought was going on and gave me a work around which was too involved for me. I then realized I had not given her a very important piece of information. According to the information you are supposed to be able to force real drum to midi drums. What I forgot was the style I had in the song did not have any drums, real or midi in it. I had selected real drums from the drum picker, so in this case there was NO midi information on the drum track hence NO sound. The real track worked but not the midi. No sure if anyone else has run into this but it wasn't the programs fault but mine. I loaded another style with all real tracks just to see if I could force the drum track to midi drums. It worked like a charm, So beware if you want midi drums you have to have midi information on that track. Hope this helps others who might have done what I did

And of course, be aware that the MIDI drums you get will not be anything like the RealDrums you are replacing. The MIDI drums will strictly be based on the definition of the underlying style that the RealTracks/RealDrums were overlaid on.

I kind of wish when they started creating RealStyles, that they started with the "blank style" as the underlying style, so any changes made must be explicit otherwise it will be (as you discovered) just blank with no sound at all, and then you avoid things like, how come the MIDI doesn't sound like the "Real"?
