More specifically, tambourine and shaker. I'm a percussionist and have certainly tracked my fair share of auxiliary parts in the past. I own some pretty nice instruments, but it's a tedious process. Right now, I'm tightening up a tune that critically needs some quality percussion.

What are YOU using? Loops? The percussion provided in BIAB? Thanks in advance!

All the best,
Mark

BiaB is my main choice... but I can also grab Jamstix if I need it.

As long as it's sampled, it should sound good. There's also the possibility of using live instruments but I'm lacking a bit on the percussion end of things. I have a cowbell around here somewhere.

Thanks for the reply, Herb! I follow your music on here: fantastic stuff!

I have both BIAB and Jamstix, but haven't used them for aux percussion yet. On all of my band's tunes, I've always just tracked the parts live. However, with things getting tighter and tighter production-wise, I'm thinking about going the sampled route: wasn't sure if there is some "holy grail" sample library that folks in-the-know are going to wink

Why not just make your own samples? You're a drummer, right? Just set up a mic, and record a tambourine track. Same with the shaker. You will give the song a live feel, and the tracks won't be perfect, like a sample would.

Hi Mark,

My go to percussion software is Brio Percussion Ensemble:

http://www.indiginus.com/Brio.html

Note that you will need the full version of Kontakt to use this software. I have found it to be one if not the best sounding percussion samples, YMMV. You can either use your MIDI controller to use it or the included sampled loops.

Good luck.

PS - Both Kontakt and Brio has sales so you may want to wait until one comes along if you are interested and if you have time to wait.

Thanks for sharing, Mario! Brio looks fairly similar to Rayzoon's Jamcussion, which I already own. It sounds great though! I've shied away from anything Kontakt in the past, simply because the full Kontakt player is so expensive. I wonder if the player included with Kontakt Komplete Elements would drive it? It's on sale at Musician's Friend right now.

I mostly use BIAB but sometimes I use Groove Agent that comes with Cubase. I really would like to get superior drummer but have more important things to save up for right now.

I happen to be missing my cowbell too. I think there is a cowbell theif going around. (Actually I hid mine from my 3 year old and forgot where I put it. LOL)

No it will not play it. Kontakt Komplete Elements contain only player versions, not the full versions. Thus it contains Kontakt Player and you need the full version of Kontakt to use Brio.

I waited until a sale and I got Kontakt at half price. There are a ton of great sounding patches for Kontakt. Many are from third party software companies. There are also a lot of free patches available. Google/Bing free percussion patches for Kontakt and you will find some.

You can get the free Kontakt Player here:

https://www.kvraudio.com/product/kontakt-player-by-native-instruments

You might want to try it along with some of the free patches. It is a good way to see if you like Kontakt. Plus it is a cost effective way to decide!

You can also get the free Kontakt Player from Native Instruments' site itself. I would make sure you are on their mailing list, so you get the notices of their sales. That's how I've gotten even Komplete Ultimate upgrades over time for significant savings. Also, usually when you buy a library, you also get a $25 coupon for your next purchase, and sometimes you shortly get an offer to upgrade to Kontakt Full at a reduced price as well. A little patience can save a lot of money with NI.

I've been looking at Brio, Mario, but haven't gotten it yet (I've got a number of other Indiginus libraries, however, and love them - Strum Maker, Acoustic Guitar Collection, AGC Remix, Solit State Symphony, Blue Street Brass, Wurl-E Studio, Kinnor Harp, Lead Guitar, Nashville Electric Guitar, Metal Electric Guitar, Lap Harp, and Electric Pianos). I'll put Brio up there for my next go round based on the recommendation. Thanks!

Hi John, The Solid State Symphony is my go to synth strings. They are the best IMHO.

Thanks for the reply, Sammy! As a drummer, I have a nice custom electronic kit (in addition to my 60's Ludwigs and newer "road" Ludwig kit). I own Steven Slate drums, EZDrummer 2, and BFD Eco to use with the midi that I record with the e-kit. However, hand percussion is mostly an afterthought with the big drum vsti's, though they do include some.

P.S. I took a couple of minutes to check out the music on your website. I dig what you've got going on!

Update: After exhausting all of the options that I already own (BIAB, Jamstix/Jamcussion, EZDrummer, Mixcraft's included loops, and any free online loop library I could find), I bit the bullet and purchased Shimmer Shake Strike by In Session Audio. It's not exactly a cheap option at $99, but it does sound great, is easy to tweak, and includes lots of "round robin" samples that keep things sounding as if they were actually played live. Shimmer Shake Strike works with both the full Kontakt and the free Kontakt player.

If the work that I was doing was only for demos or my personal use, there's no way that I would drop that kind of money on a hand percussion VSTi. However, it's being used on my band's stuff that sells pretty readily online and at our shows. It's worth it for something that's very high fidelity and can comfortably fit into a tightly edited mix.

Here's a quick Youtube walkhrough for anyone interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrcAX537278

Thanks for all of the input!
