Hi all,
I am very new to Band in a box. But I am struggling to change time signatures throughout a piece of music.
I have a piece that has a time signature 3/4, but occasionally throughout the piece I have a bar that changes to 5/4. How do I change this one bar. I have hit F5 and found a beats per bar but it only ever allows you to select 1 - 4. I need to be able to select 5 beats for the 5/4 change, or is there some other way to make this change?

Hi Welcome to the forums. One of BIAB's quirks is that the initial style needs to be one based on the highest time signature of the song. So, if your case, if you want a 5/4 bar anywhere in the song, you'd need to load a 5/4 style first off and then set bar 1 to 3 beats. That said, since you are working with a 5/4 addition, the above is not necessary. My experience is that 5 beats in a bar are usually articulated as either 3+2 or 2+3. To accomplish this, you only need to add one extra bar in your song and set it to 2 beats. This means that your single bar of 5/4 is being accomplished by playing a bar of 3/4 and a bar of 2/4 side by side. If you want a 3+2 articulation, insert the bar after the bar where 5/4 is needed. If you want 2+3 insert the bar before the one where you want 5/4. The waltz style should fit this and accommodate 2 beats. Also, when you change the bar 2 beats, you will need to change the following bar to 3 beats otherwise the rest of the song will be 2 beats. Hope this makes sense, Noel

I think you have to make it into two bars. One of 2 beats and one of 3. More than 4 beats to a bar is something that has been on the wish list for a while.

Agreed. And if you ever need to have 3/4 and 4/4 in the same song (not this one), it must start with 4/4.

Thanks everyone. That now makes sense in the documentation. Looks like they are referring to build multiple bars to make up the beats. That makes it awfully hard to keep track on bar numbers if you're referencing actual music that you are obtaining the chords from. I am surprised this software does not take into account more than 4 beats per bar.

If you have the Windows version of BIAB, its partner program called Realband will let you insert a 5/4 bar. That will have been installed during BIAB's installation.
Once you get the hang of BIAB, if you have Realband it, might be worthwhile having a play around with that.
