I'm trying to record audio for the first time and it's recording only on the left track. I don't have this problem with other recording software (such as Garage Band). The VU Meter shows a signal only on the left. I hope this is an obvious beginner problem. Can anyone help? Thanks!

I had this problem early on with my Focusrite Scarlett interface - found that I had to have the input set to stereo (rather than mono) in the Scarlett mixer software...
Hope that helps! Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Hi Steve,

The issue is that your mic is a mono signal, and you're recording it onto a stereo track.

This'll fix it: Click on the Band-in-a-Box menu, then Preferences, Audio Settings, and change the Audio track type for this song and new songs to mono.

As long as you record mono signals to mono tracks, they'll play through both speakers.

Thanks

Thanks! That's the exact info I was looking for! However, unfortunately, the dropdown for "Audio track type for THIS song" is grayed out and set to stereo. I can't change it. Any advice?

Thanks Bruce! Unfortunately, I can't find any way to set stereo/mono in my interface (Focusrite Control 2.3.4). The Hardware Input don't have any settings except for pan sliders (which would imply stereo!), mute, and solo. Only the outputs (headphones, etc.) have a button for stereo. In "Device Setting" I can set LINE or INST for Analogue 1 and I have it set to INST.

Hi Steve,

If you haven't recorded audio in that song yet, then it doesn't have an audio track, and that drop-down menu will be greyed out. You can just change the "new songs" setting, and it'll automatically change the "this song" setting.

Thanks

Ah, that seems to work! I get misled however, because the VU Meter shows only the left track input (which may be correct in a sense?) and the Record Audio dialog box prominently proclaims "Track type is Stereo" which may be accidentally hard-coded. Nevertheless, when I play back now I hear my lovely voice right in the center.

The "this song" dropdown is kinda stubborn and stays grayed out. I was able to get it to free up (offering both stereo and mono) by converting the track. After that you can select mono or stereo and it will bring up the convert track dialogue box.

Thanks very much!

Thanks for pointing this out, I'm reporting it right now!

Glad I could help, by the way.

Mics are mono generally so you want to record it in mono. No need to waste the hard drive space on a stereo track.

I don't record audio into BB or RB but the principle is the same in my DAW. I set the track input to Left Asio and it creates a mono track straight up the center of the mix.
