Cashmere Sweater - Musicoin Link

Cashmere Sweater - Soundcloud Link

This is a song I wrote 2 years ago for February Album Writing Month. It has always been one of my favorite songs to come from that challenge. Till now it has been an acoustic demo which I think can be found on my Soundcloud profile. I just rerecorded it using BIAB to produce the instrumentals. I hope you like this song as much as I do. Let me know what you think.

Technical Notes

Real Tracks:
522:Guitar, Acoustic, Fingerpicking
1856:Cello, Background Pop Country
2488:Bass, Acoustic, Bowed Held
624:Fiddle, Soloist, George

I mixed everything for this song in Cubase 9. I just got Ozone 8 and Neutron 2 and this is the first song that I've used them both on. I put neutron on the instrumentals and used built in presets for each instrument. It was also used on the vocals and mix bus. On the vocals I used Neutron, Butch Vig Vocals and Softube Saturation. I also used 2 sends for slapback delay and reverb. On the mix bus I used Abletunes Space and Drive Knobs, Final Mix Mixbuss EQ and Neutron visual mixer on the to give some more width and depth to the mix. I finished it off with Ozone where I used the Gentle Acoustic preset then added a Sterio Imager and made tweaks on everything till I got the mix I wanted.

Lyrics
I miss my cashmere sweater.
It left me yesterday.
I miss my cashmere sweater.
It up and ran away.

It had a little hole on the lower left side.
Where I’d stick my finger inside.
It was so warm and soft to the touch.
Oh how I miss it so much.

I miss my cashmere sweater.
It left me yesterday.
I miss my cashmere sweater.
It up and ran away.

It had a stitch on the right hand pocket.
From where it got snagged on the bedroom closet.
I liked to hold it close on dark cold nights.
We'd just sit and stare up at the moonlight.

I miss my cashmere sweater.
It left me yesterday.
I miss my cashmere sweater.
It up and ran away.

It was grey. It went with anything.
Now it’s gone. I can’t believe this is happening.
It smelled so sweet like her perfume.
It had a smile that could light up the room.
Oh how I want it back. I want it back by my side
There is no other one. It lit up my life.
Now I’m so lonely. I could use its company.
It use to hold me but now it runs from me.
Oh it runs from me.

I miss my cashmere sweater.
It left me yesterday.
I miss my cashmere sweater.
It up and ran away.

Hi Samuel Davis
So I presume the girl took it! Does the sweater make the women?
Like the suit makes the man? Interesting detailed song. I like this song. Thanks for posting it smile

It was never his in the first place. The sweater is hers and is used as a metaphor for their relationship.

Since you said...
"I hope you like this song as much as I do. Let me know what you think."

...I'll give you my impressions straight up. I think you have a bunch of talent and I like a lot of your stuff. I wanted to like this (because of your introduction of it), but I think it "misses".

I listened before you answered LPMan - and figured that you were using the sweater to mean "her". I don't think it works, though. You personify the sweater from start to finish and never transition to "her" (I kept waiting for that to happen in the end). I think the main "problem" (I'm calling it a problem because it is to me. It may not be for anyone else) is it remains your sweater ("my sweater") from start to finish.

The "up and ran away" line brought to mind the classic image of a guys jeans being so dirty they could walk away on their own.
It often sounds like the guy is getting a little kinky with a sweater.
"I liked to hold it close on dark cold nights."

The line
"It smelled so sweet like her perfume."
only serves to further make it seem like it's the actual sweater your are talking about - since SHE would, of course, smell of her perfume (the "like" throws it back to the sweater).

"It had a smile that could light up the room."
Makes it obvious that you are attempting to refer to HER and not the sweater, but, again, I get no transition to allow that payoff.

There are a number of good descriptive lines - all the way through.
"little hole on the lower left side."
"stick my finger inside."
"a stitch on the right hand pocket."
"It was grey. It went with anything."
All good stuff.

But, overall, it did not work for me.

The instruments and the mix sound good. I thought the vocal sounded a bit "boxy". The vocal itself is good (yours always are), but I thought the processing did not quite fit the "sorrowful ballad" that this is. There are no "tails" - delay or reverb - that I would expect. That is, of course, a purely personal preference...

Samuel,

This version is very cool but I can hear an alternate. Let me just throw something out as a secondary take that would address what Floyd has outlined as a perspective/point of view issue. It is totally up to you as the artist to make that call though.

If there is a perspective issue, try this:

You could try a second, alternate approach with a simple shift in perspective and keep the metaphor intact. I will just be throwing out ideas, and feel free to keep what sticks.

The music is great, but this might work as a skeleton for "Version 2." (If you are interested in further exploration.)

V1

I miss her cashmere sweater
and the things that she used to say
I miss her sweet love letters
and the....
I miss the...
I miss the records that we used to play
I miss the ...
I miss the...

Pre Chorus

And when I said I couldn't live without her
that's the day that she walked away
And now I'm standing in the rain and miss her
I can't believe that we've been washed way

CH

And every day
I dream of ways to go get her
cause all I have is
yesterday
and as many holes as that
cashmere sweater
the one that she just threw away
just threw away
just threw away

or something like that

I am just typing man.

anyway you can keep mentioning the cashmere sweater but list all the other things you miss, and talk about how much you love the sweater, but she actually threw it away, it means everything to you but nothing to her

I think if you can pull that off it would be absolutely heartbreaking and have major hit potential.

On production, don't go too crazy with all those new toys now.

smile

This song is about mid range and wood ...keep it warm as, well, a cashmere sweater.

Hope that was helpful. Use any of those ideas that are helpful and throw the rest away.

Again, totally love the originality of the original. This could just be a different way to explore the metaphor.

smile

Love your stuff man.

Thanks Floyd and David for your detailed replies. This is by no means meant to be a "hit song". It's just a cheesy bittersweet love song that for some reason I love. Maybe because it's very different from what I usually write. However it's not meant to be taken literal. For me it works and I think trying to change it would personally make me like it less.

On the technical side there may be something I could do better with the vocals to warm them up. Just not sure what. Maybe I'll revisit it next week.

Like I said Samuel, I think the first version is really really cool.

Maybe we can save some of that stuff I typed up and do another song together as a collab called my old jacket.

Glad Neutron and Ozone are working out for you! What reverb are you using on the vocal...don't think I saw a mention of that.

We always enjoy the emotion/soul that comes through on your vocals and this does not disappoint.

Nice RT choice...like the bowed bass.

I used Reverb SOLO by Acon Digital. I believe it is free. You have one big knob to control room size and a slider to control dry/wet amount. Since I put it on an FX send I set it all the way to wet and controlled the level with the send amount and FX slider.

There is also a snapback delay on a separate FX send that is controlled the same way. I used the built in delay that comes with Cubase for that.

These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!

And, if you are looking for more, the 2026 49-PAK (for $49) includes an impressive collection of 20 bonus RealTracks, featuring exciting and inspiring additions to add to your RealTracks library. There are also new indie-folk styles with guitar, bass, 6-string bass used as a high-chording instrument, acoustic guitar, and banjo. Plus, dedicated "cymbal fills" RealDrums provide an added layer that work very well with low-key folky styles with other percussion.
