I found a good midi file that has an armed forces medley. We want to use it for a Veterans' Day program at a retirment home. This song is 209 bars long with 5 tempo changes. I read the PT manual and it appeared to me that you cannot do tempo changes at a given bar like BIAB. I made those changes in BIAB with no problem.
(1) Now I want to change the volume (velocity) for one of the tracks only for a given number of bars only. I'm only working on one track and it has 3 parts (same instrument) within the same track. I'm leavning the other tracks unchanged.
(2) I would also like to know if I can go to notation mode, delete the notes for one of the 3 parts, and have those notes permanently out of the song.
Which program should I use for this editing, PT or BIAB? Which would be the best choice?

PT provides much more flexibility for Midis than BB. Tempo changes may get assigned via the tempo map. Volume changes are easily adjusted via the PianoRoll Window. Each track may get its own VSTi etc.
The sequencer functions of BB are rather rudimentary in comparison.

Thanks, I guess I didn't understand about the tempo map. It seems that the tempo changes were removed when I opened the file in PT. I guess I'll just have to try and see if I can get things to work in PT although biab is a lot easier for me.

In PTW or RealBand, you can delete single or multiple notes in a track in a number of ways. You can use Edit > Change Velocities and change values by a percentage for a track or section.

Changing velocity for a section-
Highlight that section of the track and use 'edit - change velocities'
For deleting notes-
You can do this in the notation window, the piano roll window, the tracks window or the event list!
Quickest way-
Highlight the notes you want to remove in the tracks window and use 'edit-cut' (making sure the 'leave gap' option is selected in the popup)
Sounds like you'll need to note the tempo changes and when they occur, then insert them in the Tempo map of PT.
That is weird that the tempo changes don't get imported with the song. Where do they work correctly? BiaB?

The tempo changes now work correctly in biab, but I had to re-enter them. I'm not sure what made them disappear in the first place. I'm going to make a 2nd file to use in PT just in case. Sounds like that the notes can be deleted from the existing midi track per your comment, but it will take me a little time to learn how to do it. I've been doing a lot of that kind of stuff in Sibelius just because I already know that program. I guess my problem with the velocity is that I'm used to seeing things in dbs. Increasing or decreasing volume as a percentage of average volume just seems a little weird to me.

If you don't like the percentage feature, there are other ways.
For instance the event list, using the data filter checkbox ...

Thanks rharv, you always have good info to pass on. I've been reading the manual--a lot of stuff there. I see the window to change the velocity. There are no explanations as to what some of the blocks are or what info is in them. Also I couldn't find anything about selecting part of a single track. I'm going to just jump in and see how far I get.

To select part of a track you can either highlight that section in the tracks window or use the 'From-Thru' settings manually (upper right corner in default layout).

I funny thing happenen on the way to the song......When I opened the midi file with the tempo changes I made in biab, the tempo changes were not there in power tracks and all of the tracks were on a single track. I switched to real band and the tracks are separated and the tempos from the original (not mine) midi file are there. I'm just going to try everything with real band now even though I'm not using any real tracks.

Realband IS a more recent build and engine. I use it almost exclusively now.
It sounds like the file may have gotten saved as a 'Type0' mid file, which puts everything on one track.
Try saving as a Type1 mid file to save on separate tracks.

I also do this medley in midi but mine is all the same tempo. I know that does not answer your question but what I am doing here is offering you the file that I use if you have to go that way. Just PM me and I will send you the file, that also contains the Coast Guard Anthem.

In the original file I have, the tempo changes are there and I can watch them change as the song plays--even a ritard or 2--pretty cool. However, the Air Force song tempo was too fast and I got it down in real band. I'm using a Ketron SD2 and I really like this arrangement. I can send it to you if you would like it--the original, I mean.

I just loaded a file of "American Pie" that I previously downloaded from the web. It has several tempo changes in it. What I can say is that if you load it in BIAB, BIAB will ignore those tempo changes. If I load it in PTPA (or RealBand), the tempo changes play fine (and I see them there on the tempo map). However, if you saved the file from BIAB after you loaded it (by clicking on the MIDI button), you will lose those tempo changes if you load that file into PTPA.
So, I guess I would need to see your original file to figure out what's going on, because it works fine here (but on a different song).

Thanks John. I think that my major mistake was in going to BIAB. I did it because I knew how to make the tempo changes there. I didn't mess up the original file though. Finally, I went to RB and it the tempo changes were in the original file. I only need to make one additional tempo change which worked out fine even saving the file as a .mid. Soooooo...I'm staying in RB for the rest of my editing on this song.

Hi everyone.
This is my first time posting, but I have been reading some of the posts and have been learning from them. Anyway, I am trying to decide which to purchase: BIAB or PTPA.
I am in a quartet and I want to be able to sing a melody line thru a mic into the program and have the program add 3-part harmony to it. Being able to tweak the harmony parts manually and to print out the parts would be a plus. Can anyone offer a suggestion on which I should buy?

Hi Stockerup and welcome,
It is very hard to answer your question without knowing what backing tracks, if any, you are going to use. More information is really needed to lead you to the right program. Hopefully the following will help.
1-If you are going to sing acappella then either program will work. However you may not be satisfied with the end results IF you are looking for barbershop quartet results. If you were going to use these just for barbershop practice then they would be perfect. If you are looking for super quality end results then you would need to spend more money to get a better harmonizer IMHO. You can get very good harmonies with either program, they use the same harmonizer, but they sound best with backing tracks.
2-If you have purchased some commercial wavs backing tracks then PTPA would be a better choice. However you will need a midi track to generate the harmonies.
3-If you need to generate backing tracks then BiaB is the way to go. Just add the chords, pick a style, sing and add generate the harmonies. BiaB comes with RealBand , PTPA minus the harmonizer. Both BiaB and RB use PG Music’s Real Tracks so be sure to check them out.
Tweaking the parts can be done in either program.
Neither program will generate print outs of audio.

It is important that I am able to print the music out after it is created. I have been looking at some of the tutorials and it is my understanding that you can extract vocals or instrument parts from a CD and assign them to individual channels-- is that correct??? Also, I want to be able to sing a vocal, melody line into the software and add harmony parts to it. If you are saying that I can not print the finished song to sheet music that would be a major problem.

Stockerup, if you want to print out the audio, you can't. Anywhere. However if you get another programme, Melodyne from Celemony, it is possible to convert audio to MIDI. MIDI can be printed out. That is the only way to do it unless you can write music, in which case you need to input the notes (either by hand or using a MIDI instrument).
