I know some of you collaborate sometimes to write songs, but "what if" we can use the forum to ask for some collaboration open to all the great humans around here? Something like.. "hey musicians! I made this beautiful song but is missing some piano intro or se guitar riff... anyone want to improvise something???" We can even form groups or competitions using the same style.... Just for fun of course...

Anyway....many here collaborate so I'd guess you'll generate some interest and you got a bump. Good luck on your quest....

Just look at all the really cool collaborations that people are doing. Collaborating is alive and well here. To me, that's the sign of a healthy musical community.
Often, much of the collaboration takes place behind the scenes. As you listen to the songs, take note of the talents of the folks involved. Do they sing well, do they play an instrument or do they rely totally on RT's? Find someone who has the skills you are looking for. From within the forum, you can PM them to see if they're up for a collab. BTW: just because someone relies totally on the RT's doesn't detract from their ability to write. In fact, it can do just the opposite. Some of the best writers can't play an instrument very well. However.... It frees them from the need to be a master of multiple instruments and concentrate solely on their writing, production, and singing.
Of course, you can also simply just post here in the SONGWRITING forum. THat's one of the main purposes for this forum. Yeah, it's a place to post info on how to write better and all that stuff, but it's also a place to post asking for help on writing and recording a project with other PG'ers.
So.... have something ready to go.... could be nothing more than the idea and a verse or a chorus, PM someone you think might be interested and see what they say.
I've been turned down by numerous folks for one reason or another, and had a few bail out in the middle of the project.... but the ones that said yes and completed the project.... man, those are some good songs. I'd go through 10 "no" responses to get one that said yes and a really good song was the result. "no's" don't bother me. It's kinda like dating and marriage.... you have to find the right collaborator and everything falls into place naturally. Try to force it, and things end poorly.

It would be a good idea to have a Collaboration forum. That would be easier than sifting through the forums to see what is required.

This is a great idea, and I tell you why. I am a regional coordinator for the Nashville Songwriter's Association (NSAI is not just country, but all genres) and the #1 thing that the organization stresses above and beyond anything else is: THE POWER OF COLLABORATION.In brief, most pros believe you simply will not grow and get better and stretch your limitations if you do not collaborate. Collaborators force you to get real, to work harder to make your song stronger. They bring honesty, fresh ideas, novel approaches, and things you never would have thought of. In fact, I have often heard it said that there are three rules to growing better as a songwriter: 1. Collaborate. 2. Collaborate. 3. Collaborate. Since Band-in-a-Box is the world's most awesome tool for songwriters, in my opinion at least (I couldn't live without it, seriously) it makes all the sense in the world to have a collaboration forum with some process behind it. There are SO MANY opportunities out there for film, sync licensing and on and on where some people on the forum would have a much better shot if they collaborated. As but one example, look at all the postings where they ask for a gentle song with soaring female vocals. You have the pretty song idea but you sound like a 4-pack a day Marlboro smoker. Or whatever. So many different nuances to this. Great idea. Somebody start this. (It needs some process thinking though, almost like a billboard--"I got....but I need...gonna pitch it to..interested??? P.M. me etc.) * P.S. Behind the scenes, I am right now working with Noel Adams who is a scholar when it comes to lyrics. He is coaching me and teaching me some stuff about how to up my game with lyrics to make them, stronger, more accessible and more commercial. A really great and smart guy. I am learning all kinds of things. BUT, it is HARD. You can't have much of an ego when you get down to the nitty gritty. I have re-written one thing like 20 times and keep tearing it up and starting over. Collaborators and coaches here on this forum are the greatest thing ever, but when you decide to get better it is like "no pain no gain." It hurts. Those growing exercises can bring the aches and pains. But you gotta do it.

That is very insightful David, thank you so much for sharing this! Definitely something I need to consider in my own writing practices!

EMG,
An important consideration when collaborating, and one that I keep forgetting... always save your .sgu and .mgu files so the other parties can use them.
I got in the bad habit of deleting those critical files after rendering to .wav or .mp3 and my collaborator has nothing to work with.
It's a good idea to save everything until the project is completed.
How would I know this?! lol

Hi EMG I added a layered paino improvisation to a YouTube user named meta sage. I wanted to see if was possible to add a custom piano backtrack to what he was saying ( link below ). When I listen to the 9 minutes of my piano alone I hear unresolved progression parts. So I removed it. Now I have a 5.58 minutes. But I am bored with it. I take my 5.58 minutes piano midi and feed it to BIAB with a country style eliminating my piano altogether. I mute piano 2 my piano playing cause it doesn't match anymore with the country style. So now I can develop, a new theme bass-line, and salvage the parts I like of this song, to make a new song. As a collaboration, the MGX file can be salvageable as one see's fit. I hope I explained this correctly... meta sage R Ra.mp3
