My main Mac, that I use for work, is full of all sorts of programs and is struggling a bit. I have another MacBook - not a recent one - but probably about the same age as my main one.

If I take the spare one and try to optimise for BIAB use, are there any tips - maybe an existing thread?

I'm happy to delete other programs and data. I am using an external drive ultra pak, BIAB product that I got new about 18 months back, and am just looking to play back backing tracks for practice.

Thanks for any ideas folks!

Not enough information. What year MacBook and what kind of drive? What OS? What version of BIAB and year?

Although I can write a very long general article on the subject, it's much better to tailor it to your needs.

Basically as Mike said, it does vary slightly year to year model to model, but luckily Mac OS in general is pretty well optimized out of the box.

The one basic rule is, if you are having problems running audio software, turn off anything you don't happen to be using at the time.
The biggest offender IMHO would be File Vault encryption, you should always have that turned off on a machine you plan on using for audio.

Other big offenders would be, bluetooth, wifi and networking via Firewire, you can turn anything that you don't absolutely need while running your audio software.

Here is a pretty good listing I found some time back, for various versions of OS X and how to turn off non-essential services for each version.

Hopefully this helps.

EDIT: I almost forgot !
One more thing would be to make sure "app nap" is disabled for BIAB.
Select the BIAB app in the Finder, right click it and select "Get Info", you should make sure the box to disable "app nap" is checked .

Thanks guys, that is really useful!

I'll look into this and if I need anything more specific I'll check and post details of the actual Mac.
