I am looking into a method for creating XF type MIDI files that would work with some of my Yamaha devices. I did not think that BB had any support for this, but there seem to be some hints that BB does in fact embed "Chord Events" into MIDI files under some circumstances. I am hoping that this capability (if it exists) could be leveraged somehow with a tool liks PSRUTI or possibly the old XFTOOLS utilities to make usable XF MIDI files. Can someone illuminate me on this topic. When I see quotes like this:

"Other PG Music programs use manufacturer-specific meta events in the MIDI files for chord symbols. You can optionally have Band-in-a-Box interpret chords from scratch, or use the existing chord symbols."

It makes me think that BB can deal with and possibly put the correct Chord Events into MIDI in such a way that an XF type file could be created.

Hello,

Go to: Opt/Pref/OutPutCh

Click the top left box.

Mine are set as follows:
Channel # 16
velocity 1
Note range 36-60
Complex Chords
And all 4 remaining boxes checked.

I set my Tyros up to use channel 16 for the harmony track for either vocal or midi harms. Works a treat here.

Save as type "0" midi file.

I think you may need to change the .extention from .mid to .xf for the file to be read by a Yamaha Keyboard Synth. It is a long time since I used to transfer .mid files between my Synth and PTW.

The combination of the info Muzic Trax above with the PSRUTI can be made to work. PSRUTI has an analysis function that determines what the chords of the MIDI file are. Since I can now have them come across in a single MIDI channel it is easy to help it find them and then produce the special chord events that the Yamaha keyboards and other Yamaha instruments use. The files seem to be "standard" MIDI and you load them onto the device using the Yamaha SoundFiler utility.

The only thing to remember is that you may want to strip out the MIDI chord channel before saving the final MIDI file or it might get "played" by the device. Muzic Trax want this, but my purpose is to get the chords to be displayed by the device in much the same way it would display lyrics for you to sing along to, but not to actually play the chords.

I am not completely done with the procedure yet, but the mechanics of this seem to work.
