I recorded this late one night - it was a song I'd been working on for a while but maybe because of the late hour or just because it was not totally familiar to me I recorded it a bit slowed down (musically slowed down, not mechanically). However I really like the sound I got on this one, once I had got the mix done, so I'm offering it up to see what you think.

Almost every Robert Johnson song has a unique aspect in the guitar part and on this one it's in the harmonics - most prominent in the 2nd chorus - I added a solo guitar chorus and repeated the second chorus at the end. There was no conscious decision about the arrangement , it's just the way it came out, warts and all.

What warts? You and Robert at the Crossroads, Peter.
Never knew of Johnson until that 1986 movie with Ralph Macchio about a missing Johnson song.
For the uninitiated http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crossroads_(1986_film).

Well rendered indeed, Peter.

Cheers

Hi Ian,

Sorry to be slow to respond but was under the weather for a couple of days. I remember that movie vaguely, it's been a while. The official line coming from the inheritors of the Robert Johnson legacy is that he was a religious man and that the pact with the devil is just fictional hype. In many of the blues players lives there is a pull between the the religious and the secular, there was even a scene about it in the recent movie on Ray Charles. My belief is that Johnson was commenting on the human condition and the world he saw around him, which includes some superstitions. And he was a very young man when he died, he was probably still sowing his oats so to speak. He had troubled relationships and bouts of depression also. If you look at the life of Hank Williams, you find a lot of similarities.

Thanks for the kind words. This recording was a bit of a breakthrough for me, especially in the impromptu guitar solo.

Top notch!

If you'd restrict the bandwith of your eq and added some crackles and pops you could sell it as a Robert Johnson bootleg

OK, a random thought;

Thanks Mike, yeah, I could market the missing Robert Johnson take. He's gone, but not forgotten, especially by those who collect the royalties.

Hi Mario, I realized when I played this back a few times that the planets had aligned. Drive a stake and move on. Thanks Mario!
