I've loaded my external midi synth midi patch map and can save higher bank patches on the melody track in BIAB. No problem there with hundreds of songs set up this way.
But when I assign a higher bank patch to the Thru track this setting is lost when the song is saved. on opening again, that track then defaults back to the GM midi setting that is setup in the "MIDI Settings" under "Channels" under the "Preferences" tab. This GM patch setting continues from song to song regardless of how I save the current song.
I tried "Save" "Save As" and "Save As with Patches and Harmonies". The best I am able to due is to save the same higher bank patch for all songs. That is, as soon as I go to another song, the same higher bank patch is loaded as the previous song.
I would like to be able to call up specific higher bank patches on the Thru channel when a song is loaded so I can play along with the BIAB songs using the selected higher bank sounds.
Seems like it would make sense that if you can select and save higher bank patches on the melody track that you could due the same on the Thru tack.
I must be missing something here. Any thoughts?
Jeff

Did you try to save the requested Thru patch via the F5 key/Patch changes and choose a Patch on higher bank ? You can do that at bar#1. Then save your song. It should work. That is the way I proceed.

Hold on here Mike. John-Luke's idea convinced me to keep trying to work this. Actually it does work, it's simpler than I thought and makes some sense.
So what I'm doing is I'm using a Motif Rack module that I've loaded the .ins ( patch map ) file into BIAB. As in the past, I select a patch from the higher banks of the Motif for the melody track (channel 4) which BIAB plays on playback, as it always has, with no problems.
Then on the Thru track (channel 5), I select different Motif patch from the higher banks that I want to play "live" on my keyboard. I hit "save". That's it, nothing else needed...but there's a slight catch.
If I now go to another BIAB song, open that..the Thru track will play the patch from the first song above. So I change that to what I want on the second song and hit "save" on that song.
Now, I go back to the first song. Guess what? The Thru track displays correct patch name for the first song but if I hit the keyboard it plays the patch from the second song!
I've done this over and over again on a dozen songs, and each time BIAB remembers the patch selected for the Thru track of the previous song but displays the correct patch name for the Thru track of the current song.
But here's the catch: If I hit play on that first song, the Thru track changes to the correct patch sound I selected with that song.
I guess what's happening here is that BIAB is sending out MIDI info each time play is selected not when you first open up the song which I originally thought it was doing. Live and learn.
I do appreciate you guys jumping in here to help. It spurred me on to find a workable solution.
Jeff

BIAB doesn't send out the MIDI commands on loading a song, but waits until you tell it to do so (i.e. when you hit Play).

HI John and Jeff.
Thank you for your workaround. good one and so simple at the end of the day.
Yes Jeff it's not the only time you have to set the transport running and then pause if you want to, in order to make the mixer and other voice changes take effect. Same goes for Realband when separate instances of synths are inserted on different tracks. Mike

Thanks guys. Took a few minutes to wrap my head around how BIAB initially transmits MIDI info. My initial thinking was that it loads the Midi info when it first opens a song, especially if the tracks are frozen. I thought this because the patch names are accurately displayed upon opening. But when I realized that this is just the display and MIDI is transmitted only when you hit "Play" it all fell into place.

Mike, I just reread your comment "you have to set the transport running and then pause if you want to, in order to make the mixer and other voice changes take effect."
What I am saying is that after the song is saved with both a MIDI patch on the melody and another different MIDI patch on the Thru channel, when I hit "Play" they both load at the same time. I have immediate access to the Thru channel on my keyboard while the melody plays on the Melody track.
Hope that makes sense.
Jeff.
