Last year when the video RealTracks were released there was a discussion about the pedal steel guitar video and how useful is the video without knowing how a pedal steel guitar works. As it turns out, there's a YouTube video for that! +++ HERE +++ is a seven minute video where pedal steel guitar player Steve Fishell explains how the double necks are tuned, what the floor pedals do and what the knee pedals do. One thing you'll quickly realize is that pedal steel guitar players have a strong knowledge of what notes make up a chord and how to use that knowledge to their advantage. There is a lot of fundamental music theory knowledge needed to be able to explain how those pedals alter a chord. Band-in-a-Box has the tools needed to learn this music theory knowledge.

I studied pedal steel for a year with the late great Mike Auldridge. I finally got to the point where Mike suggested I lock myself in the basement for a year or two. He figured I had the basics down and the only thing left was a couple of years in the shed,
To me the pedal steel is probably the most difficult instrument I have ever attempted. The constantly changing harmonic voicings presented as the bar moves by all the pedals and levers. For me it was overwhelming. On a simple tuning one can play a 1-6-2-5 without moving the bar, merely by pushing pedals and levers. Once the bar starts moving the possibilities are endless.
It all requires a finely tuned ear. The “fret” markers are just locations where the note is. You have to hear each note, each interval, each chord. A vibrato only hides so much.
I eventually sold my steel and returned to the 6 string. I occasionally bring out one of my 8strings non-pedals for a swing tune. You just can’t beat that sound on a C6 tuning..
I admire beyond words any competent pedal steel player. Buddy Edmonds took the instrument to another planet. Greg Liesz shows just how much further that instrument has yet to go.

My elder brother was a multi-instrument talent. I once heard him pick up a toy ukulele, quickly tune it up and make it sound good. His instrument of choice was the double neck pedal steel guitar and he was considered a world class player. He played on the Grand Ol' Opry and toured with Loretta Lynn, Jimmy C. Newman and Stonewall Jackson. When he wasn't touring he worked in Nashville as a session musician and producer. He was a founding member of the +++ Steel Guitar Forum +++, good friends with +++ Buddy Emmons +++ and endorsed both +++ Emmons and Sho-Bud +++ steels (not at the same time as well as +++ Peavey Steel Guitar Amplifiers +++. Unfortunately, he died too soon. If you like to listen to music that features pedal steel guitar +++ HERE +++ is a 24 hour steel guitar music streaming service.

If you'd like to hear what I consider the best pedal steel player in the world give a listen to any of Dave Hartley playing. He has perfect intonation and phrasing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM_fMLv_Q9oCheers, Mike
