I guess that situations change over a period of ~6 years. I also guess that we need to expect that. I really don't know the answer, but is the original title still current? Is that still done using the same method as proposed originally?

TT1-S is no longer available. The only way to get it is to install an old copy of Cakewalk or Sonar. The best solution is the Sound Canvas VA from JRR: https://www.jrrshop.com/roland-sound-canvas-va-plugin-lifetime-key

Is that still done using the same method as proposed originally? Original title is obsolete, as the only proper way to install TTS-1 is if you have a 2017 or earlier Sonar or older copy of Bandlab's Cakewalk version. For those who don't have pre 2017 version, but do have older Bandlab's copy, here is a guide by John V. on how to preserve it:

The best solution is the [lifetime key] Sound Canvas VA I've now several times considered getting the SoundCanvas CA as it appears to be a good virtual synth that's very popular and well respected. OK so far. The problem I have is that I try to research whatever I buy and every time when trying to find out what's included, what's not, what the differences are, what that means and so on, just leaves me frustrated and angry ... I'm not going to spend my beer vouchers on something I can't positively identify and characterise. Every time I look I go down a rabbit hole of dozens of options that may or may not be relevant, may or may not be useful, may or may not be value for me. That kind of "we're wonderful, just spend the money" marketing really [phrase redacted by author]! I guess it's not just me? Edit: I walked away from Roland's site and searched YouTube. There are loads of videos of all the various hardware & software modules, but I've seen enough to be reasonably convinced.

Gordon, Also, if you search Soundcloud for SoundCanvas VA, there are lots of tracks there that also give some insight into the software. --Noel

The SoundCanvas VA manual is here. I use it as my default MIDI GM sound engine.

A first look turned up lots of video game type soundtracks, but I'll likely try again and/or I may just get it. So much seems to focus on synthesisers and EDM-type beats, not so much on real instruments.

Gordon, it has standard GM soundset too. Is it good? It's OK for a 23 year old synth. (This is emulation of a hardware unit) I would say prime usage is just to be able to play GM stuff. And if you are after a particular sound. But...if you are looking for somewhat realistic sounding instruments, this is not it. The best overall software option that would map GM automatically and do program changes in my opinion is Halion/Sonic (full), but the newest version has issues with GM. So it has to be a version before that. For the price, Roland VA is not bad.

Okay, I went for it at JRRShop.com, (It out of stock at Sweetwater and some others). There was a $6.90 discount, bringing the total to $62.10. I did have some trouble figuring out how to download and install it. But, once I got it done, it looks and sounds interesting (but, not with the default settings). I also set it up in Realband The Manual referenced in this thread for download was a help. You can set it for GM2, and has several Roland instrument implantations. I'm finding it to be much better sounding than the TTS-1 on guitars and horns so far. If someone has experience with this module and would be willing to set up a new topic with hints on installing and using it, that would be great. I'm certainly not the one qualified to do that!

There are may others that work well when layered or as part of a large mix. A lot of them were done by my friend Eric Persing who went on to form Spectrasonics (Omnisphere, Keyscape, Trillian). I used to work for Roland as a writer.

I use the 8820 soundset. That seems to be the most expansive since it is from one of the last Sound Canvas modules.

I finally came back to try HALion/Sonic again, but for me at least, I collected the newer Download Assistant, but it still says it won't run on my PC (Win11; i5-12400F). I gave up last time when I became bored of trying to find a fix/workaround. Quite a few people seem to have issues with it.

Unfortunately, TTS-1 is no longer included with Cakewalk. But if you have older versions - Sonar, etc. you may still be able to use it in the new Cakewalk. I'm trying to figure out how to use it in Studio One or Reason.

Got that right! I used to love Roland (1st synth was a Juno 60), but their lack of support and complete abandonment of Dimension Pro has left a bad taste in my mouth.
