I've been writing for just over a year, and I've got about 40 songs finished or just about finished, about 20 of which I think are worth an album position.
How do you choose which songs go on which album? I'm guessing I'll have 2 mostly finished "albums" (probably need to write a few more songs for each) and one long "b-side" collection, but I don't know how to divide the albums.
Sidenote, how do you title albums (besides taking a track name/random lyric/self titled)?

Hi Heera, that is a great question. When determining what songs should go on albums, try asking yourself the following three questions (in order):
1: What message (if any) do I want to put across with the entire album?
2: Does the timbre of this song have consistency with other songs?
3: Is the tension/release of this song fit with the overarching "story arch" of the album?
Albums are usually context based. Its the difference between a compilation of songs that are good, or if you are trying to write a story. I find these questions are a great place to start.
Anyone else have any other suggestions?

I've never really done an album per se..... but if I were to do that...
I'd pick 10 to 12 songs I really liked and thought best represented my scope of work.

I think Joe very well stated it. For our album because we explore so many different genres we called it "All Over The Map."  But our EP fit Joe's suggestions perfectly as we wanted cohesiveness sufficient to suggest a message. J&B

Personally I like hearing a story progression on albums, but that's just me!

Inverse procedure for me.
I start with the premise that I'm going to write an album of, say, 10 songs.
Establish a rough breakdown (x number of rockers, x number of ballads, x number of mid-tempo, x number of 6 8, x number of piano based ....etc)
Then find a theme to link at least some of the lyrical content.
BUt increasingly I guess the concept of an album is losing traction.
