It has been a while since I enjoyed recording a song as much as I have this one. Actually, It has been a while since I recorded anything. It is a description of an actual happening, during my youth. It may have been the beginning of my life in music. I hope you enjoy it. This is, more or less, a work in progress, but I thought I would post it as is, since it has been so long since I have posted anything.

Grandma's Old Dome top Guitar

Back in the fifties, when I was a lad
my favorite memory by far
was a beat up old Gibson stored under the bed
My Grandma's old dome top guitar
the finish was faded, so she painted white
the coolest thing I ever saw
and I knew that someday, if there was a way
I'd play that old dome top guitar

She'd always sing, "Irene good night"
she'd sing "Irene good night"
the only song that my Granny knew
was "Irene good night"

She played with her finger laid across the neck
the way that I've seen Dolly do
Granny didn't know an E from A
it's the only way that she knew

I can hear her singing, "Irene good night"
she only sang, "Irene good night"
The only song that my Granny knew
was "Irene good night"

Late in the day, when the chores were all done
Grandma would snooze by the fire
I'd be in the back with a grin on my face
picking on her old white guitar

but I never sang "Irene good night"
I never sang "Irene good night"
I sang Hank Elvis and Acuff and Cash
but I never sang "Irene Good night"

I had a weird image in my head of the guitar - I'd not heard the term "dome top guitar" prior to reading the title. Arch top, yeah but not dome.
GOOD, it attracted my attention.
Lovely lyric and story - Huddy would be pleased too.
Nice arrangement - did BIAB style do that for you?

Cheers

Thanks Ray, I am not sure where the term originated myself. My Grandma called it that, but to be honest, It looked like the archtops you refer to. The reason she sang the song so much was because her name was Irene. I thought always that "good night Irene" was written by Huddy, but he always said that it came from a much older song that he had heard. Thanks again Ray. Be well.

Man, I so thoroughly enjoyed this. Tender and funny and delivered the only way it could have been. Wonderful.

Really well done smile A lovely throwback to classic country. Love the chord progressions and your vocals are sincere and the lyrics are perfectly fitting. Got me swaying right away.

Thanks for sharing!

I was thinking maybe dobro at first but it's easy to see how an old arch top could be called that in comparison to a flat top. Anyhow you gotta tell it like grandma said it!

We enjoy autobiographical songs and this is a fine one. Nice story and delivery!

Your songs are a delight- authentic and warm. This is a very good write - the story so clear and quoting the old classic on the chorus a clever touch.
Enjoyed!

Hi Gary ...

What a pleasant surprise to hear another one from you. Country and Bluegrass are perfect vehicles for terrific storytelling. Love the story and your performance. And yes, I remember "Irene Goodnight" so well. My maternal granny would sing it often.

Beautifully done and what a treat for the ears. Best to you ...

Alan
