I recently purchased a TX81Z to use with Band In A Box. When I have everything connected, I can tell that I'm close to getting some sound because I am getting flickering lights that show through the plastic of the USB part of my USB-MIDI interface (so I'm figuring it's midi data, right?). But so far no sound. Any suggestions?

You need MIDI out from your computer to MIDI in on the TX. You will also need audio out from the TX to audio in on your audio interface. You will hear nothing with only the MIDI connections.

OK, a random thought;

I'm getting sound now but, along with the sound on each part, I am also hearing the sound of the patch that is being displayed on my TX81Z. Any suggestions?

If I'm understanding what you're saying that makes sense. That is you are hearing both the sounds from your BIAB sound source and from the 81Z right? If that's the case, it has to do with what channels you have the 81Z setup to respond to. By default, BIAB outputs as follows:

Channel 2 - Bass
Channel 3 - Piano
Channel 4 - Melody
Channel 5 - Thru
Channel 6 - Strings
Channel 7 - Guitar
Channel 8 - Soloist
Channel 10 - Drums

What channel do you have the 81Z setup to respond to?

Also, are you using a MIDI interface...not an audio interface but a MIDI interface?

If I understand you correctly, all sounds are coming from the TX81Z.

I have the Basic Receive Channel on the TX81Z set to omni.

Here is the cable I bought:

Thanks for your help.

Test this by turning the TX's volume off. Are you still hearing sounds? If yes then no the sounds are not coming from the TX.

If your TX is set to omni and you are sending all of BiaB's sounds to it then yes you are hearing all of the sounds in the TX. Questions, are you hearing more than one TX sound? Do you have one patch set on the TX or a multi, sometimes called a combo? In order to hear one sound only from the TX BiaB's MIDI out MUST match the TX's MIDI in. In a multi/combo mode each BiaB tracks' MIDI out MUST match each TX patch's MIDI input.

Currently the only way I've been able to hear anything is when I plug my headphones into the TX81Z. I have tried various ways of connecting through loopmidi and MIDI USB Interface but have been unable to get any sounds when I plug into my laptop. I know I'm missing something, but so far I can't come up with the answer.

I was checking my channels (Options>Preference>Channels) and I noticed that the Piano, Drums and Soloist are all set to channel 1. Is this right?

I did create my own patch map for the TX81Z – maybe I didn’t set it up correctly?

You will not get any sound through MIDI cables or connections.

I'm assuming that you do not have an audio interface, right?

If not you need to take the audio out on the TX and plug it into the mic in on your laptop. This is not the optimum way of recording as an audio interface will give you a much cleaner sound.

For stereo you would plug the two 1/4" plugs into the TX's I/MIX and II inputs and the other end into your laptop:

https://www.amazon.com/xlr-male-1-4-adapter/s?k=xlr+male+to+1%2F4+adapter&i=electronics-accessories&rh=n%3A172282%2Cn%3A3224439011&dc&page=3&qid=1561661188&rnid=2941120011&ref=sr_pg_3

For mono you would plug the 1/4" plug into the TX's I/MIX input and the other end into your laptop.

https://www.amazon.com/Hosa-CMP-310-Mono-Interconnect-Cable/dp/B000068O3I/ref=sr_1_3?hvadid=78546432118271&hvbmt=bb&hvdev=c&hvqmt=b&keywords=1%2F4+to+1%2F8+cable+mono&qid=1561661367&s=gateway&sr=8-3

Note if you have an audio interface the above is the same with the only difference being replacing the laptop mic plug with either 1/4" plugs or XLR plugs, depending on what you audio interface with except.

Just remember no sound goes through MIDI cables, just data that a synth or computer can use.

Thanks MarioD - that should solve the problem of being able to get sound by connecting my headphones to my laptop. Now if I can find an answer to my "unwanted sound" problem...

OK, grab one of those audio cables or get some from another source and hook them up. You should get the TX sound(s) through your computer. In the mean time list exactly what you are using. Things like what kind of laptop, ram, do you have an audio interface, if so what kind? Things like this can help us tremendously. We really need to know exactly what you are doing to further help you.

Well I went ahead and purchased the audio interface - I should be receiving it Monday. Maybe then I won't have this problem with the "unwanted sound"? I certainly hope so!

Those channels are not correct, did you change them? Below see my midi channel setup which is simply the default. There is no reason for you to change that. Bass is 2, Piano 3, Drums 10 and the Soloist is 8 plus the others. You have to set your TX patches for those instruments to match those channels. Yes, you can do it the other way around, match Biab to your TX channels but why? KISS it for now keep the Biab default.

The TX has 32 patch memory locations. Make one of those patches your Soloist for example. Inside that patch you'll be able to set the midi channel to 8. I assume you have the manual for it, it should explain how to do that for each patch you want to use in Biab.

How you use the patch map in Biab is you right click on the instrument name in the top of your screen click Select MIDI Instrument Patch then Select Higher Bank Patch (From .Pat File) and you will see your patch map. This is AFTER you've set the midi channels. This is the point I made your other thread. If you were using a GM synth all that would be done automatically, here you have to select the patches and set the channels yourself.

Although I won't get my audio interface until Monday, I did some more experimenting with my setup and found out a little more about the "unwanted sound" I keep getting. I'm hoping someone out there has come across it.

For example, when I isolate the bass track (and mute all of the other tracks), I not only hear the bass sound but what I can best describe as a high metallic repeated note (sort of like a drum roll) that seems to somewhat mirror the bass notes. In other words, if a single bass note plays, along with the bass note I hear that high metallic repeated note sound. When the bass note changes pitch, the high metallic repeated note sound also changes pitch. I have done this with other tracks (having only one track play while the others are muted), and no matter what track I have playing (with the other tracks muted), that high metallic repeated note sound is also playing. Since I have muted all of the other tracks, I can't seem to put a finger on where this sound is coming from.

Although I don't receive the message any longer, I noticed in the beginning that when I first tried to get sounds out of the TX81Z, I received some sort of "data full" message on the TX81Z. Maybe I'm having a midi feedback issue or something similar?

Don't know but have you sorted your midi channels out? Also, now that you're using a hardware synth have you UNCHECKED the "Use VSTi/DXi Synth" in your Midi/Audio Drivers window?

Also, do you play an instrument yourself? Are you planning on playing a controller and using the TX for sound? If so unplug the midi cable from your computer and run it from your controller to the TX then simply play the TX and see what happens. You can change patches by using the buttons on the TX itself.

I finally figured it out!

I just decided - what the heck, I'm just going to check and uncheck any boxes in BIAB that have to do with midi and hope something works.

It turns out that under Options>Preferences>Midi Options, when the box opens up and I uncheck "Output Sync/Start Info", my "unwanted sound" goes away.
